Should seed packets have a government health warning on them?

Asked by Cosmos (648points) January 28th, 2016

Considering how poisonous certain seeds / plants are, does there need to be some kind of warning label on seed packets? Foxglove is one example but there are plenty more.

Honestly, if you’re stupid enough to add a pack of Foxglove seeds to your morning smoothie, I’m not so certain we should be going out of our way to keep you alive.

Besides, where would you draw the line at “enough” information? Foxglove is a flower, not a food plant. Do we really need a “Hey, don’t eat the thing that doesn’t look at all like food” label? My trowel doesn’t have a “do not eat” label… should I write the garden tools company?

There are already warnings on the corn seeds I used to plant. They are coated in a pink fungicide. Captan, perhaps? I don’t remember. I’ve also seen it on the pumpkin seeds: “Not for animal consumption.”
Hey, if the squirrels dig them up I figure it is their problem if they can’t read.

If seeds are being commercially distributed that are highly toxic, it only seems to make sense to me for those seeds to be marked or childproofed in some way.

The majority of (potato) chip (crisps) bags now require adult intervention to open, it doesn’t seem unreasonable for poisonous seeds to be packed the same way.

The biggest drawback to any such regulation is that the first idiot that dumps a packet of poisonous seeds into a cereal bowl and leaves it on the counter is going to sue for a bazillion dollars when their little one eats the seeds.

Possibly good in theory, a slippery slope when combined with the expectation of commons sense.
