What concerts have you seen?

Not many:

A handful of Houston Symphony Orchestra concerts on school field trips when I was a kid.

When we were living in France, we saw Bobby McFerrin (near the beginning of his career), Miles Davis (I don’t like jazz, but we were invited), and Paco de Lucia (I love guitar).

Back stateside, we took our kids to a smattering of concerts by student orchestras at Northwestern U. We’ve also seen a Russian violinist whose name, sadly, escapes me, the Canadian Guitar Quartet, the Pacifica Quartet, the Newberry Consort, Yo-Yo Ma, and a pianist whose name, sadly, escapes me.

I should add that none of these were my idea. Many were tickets given to us as presents. I’m not sure it would ever occur to me to go to a concert.

@dammitjanetfromvegas I saw Prince open for the Rolling Stones at Candlestick Park in 1981. He was booed off the stage.

He was awesome when I saw him a few years ago.

I made it to the 1967 Monterey Pop fesitival, missed Woodstock, and did Altamont. Did a lot of Winterland and Filmore in 1969–1971, saw the Warlocks/Dead, Airplane, Van Morrison, Quicksilver, Country Joe and the Fish, Joan Baez, the Pig Farm, Phil Ochs, Credence, CSN&Y, Janis Joplin and the Holding Co., Doors, etc., all grow up and morph or die. Saw the Merry Pranksters hanging around. Saw Hendrix burn his Stratocaster on stage at Berkeley. Made it to the first San Francisco “Happening”, the first Renaissance Festival and the first Earth Day (1969).

After 1971 or 72, I slowed down a bit. I was quite the head in those days (we didn’t call ourselves hippies—that was what people who lived in the burbs Minnesota reading LIFE magazine and listening to NBC Nightly Nooz called us. Things began to change, including the music (Disco) and I pretty much went toward smaller concerts, folk, jazz. Saw Dizzy Gillespie just before he died in a small black venue in St. Pete, Fla. Jack Kerouac was in the audience. He died that October.

Saw Dylan unplugged in the basement of the Jack Tar Hotel, Clearwater, Florida around 1973—a rare thing in those days. Saw the Stones at a little softball stadium (Jack Russel) in Dunedin, Florida while on their first tour. Jagger is said to have written “Satisfaction” while staying at the Jack Tar Hotel (which since has become World HQ for Scientology—Flagship One) while there those two days. Saw Sinatra in 1978. I was looking more toward individual artists by 1973: Theloniuos Monk, Mose Allyson, Taj Mahal. By 1978 I was not much into popular music anymore. Drifted into classical and jazz. Last concert was Itzhak Perlman in a small venue in Clearwater, Florida. He warmed up with a bunch of stuff in a buch of genres, but he did the whole of Carmen from beginning to end. My favorite opera.

Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me, zen. The Beatles, Cow Palace, first tour, 1964, my first concert ever. My older cousins got me in.

@Tropical_Willie Yeah, The Count. I missed him and have always regretted it. He blew the roof off the desert for Mel Brooks. That one amazingly big, brassy finish caused me to finallly understand my parent’s music. Suddenly there was something more than Led Zeplin. The second Basie clip, from 1965, is even better. That brass, the second finish at 2:38, that drummer. The definition of class.

My husband and I go to a lot of concerts, both local and national and international acts. I’ll try to remember most of the “big name” bands I’ve seen. Many I’ve seen more than once (some more than a handful of times). This is in no particular order, as I remember them. There’s also no way I could possibly name all of the local acts I’ve seen.
