Would you like join me in a celebration of life for my darling goose that passed away last night?

Asked by Coloma (47193points) February 11th, 2016

“Sonora” one of my rescue geese had to be euthanized last night for serious joint deterioration and a failing heart. He has been such a little trooper in the 8 years I have had him. Pulled from a lake with a fish hook in his eye in 2008 the eye was surgically removed, and he also had a badly broken leg that had fused leaving him with a bad limp. In recent months his joints were failing and he spent most of his time floating in his pool, resting on his favorite pillow and taking pain medications. Last week he began to really fail and so we made the decision to say “goodbye.” The vet estimated him to be at least 20 years old.
His passing has left an empty space in the barn and in my heart.

Such fond memories of the little dude. Here he is in my avatar with his beloved sheep girlfriend. He worshiped her. haha

thorninmud's avatar

Oh, so sorry! How lucky he was to have ended up with you!

chyna's avatar

So very sorry for your loss. I know he was a great source of happiness for you and you for him.

Coloma's avatar

Yes, he was such a delightful little soul. I spent the whole day yesterday with him laying in my lap, his legs stretched out behind him in the only position he was still comfortable in. Hand feeding him his favorite romaine lettuce and cracked corn. He just wanted to be held, such a loving little guy.

zenvelo's avatar

Sad day for you and for his barn-mates. Sorry to hear of the loss.

Zaku's avatar

20 good years with loving humans, sounds like a high score! :-)

Coloma's avatar

@Zaku Yes indeed. He had a great 8 years. His beginnings remain a mystery but it all ended with a happily ever after for him after a rough number of unknown years.

Pachy's avatar

Oh! This makes me very sad. Sending love, m’ dear.

Coloma's avatar

Thanks Pachy.

Coloma's avatar

<——— Here he is sitting in his water bucket. haha
Off to go have a walk about with Marwyn and the lady geese now.

Cruiser's avatar

Sonora was so fortunate to have a kind caring human like you @Coloma make his last 8 years of his life comfortable, full of joy and love. Sorry for your loss…

LuckyGuy's avatar

Who rescued whom? Sonora has been with you through thick and thin. He was one lucky goose to have ended up with you. Two lives improved. I’m sorry for your loss. (((hugs)))

picante's avatar

I’m so sorry for your loss. He had a good life with you; and I’m happy knowing that both of your great souls have graced the earth I live on.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

Can you share a photo of Sonora? He must have been beautiful.

My deepest sympathies. Losing a beloved animal companion is like having your heart ripped from your body.

Jeruba's avatar

I’m sorry for your loss, @Coloma. You gave your little guy some great years, and I’m sure he knew you were his angel.

longgone's avatar

Definitely. I’m sorry. Tell us more about him, if you like!

Coloma's avatar

@picante Thank You, yes, he was special.
@Love_my_doggie He is in my avatar, bucket sitting. He had about 5 pools and tubs and buckets for his water park amusement. haha
@Yes, and he was a goose angel too. People don’t realize that with the right care and attention any animal will blossom and become much more than one could ever imagine. geese are incredibly smart and bond with you.

Jeruba's avatar

@Coloma, how do you begin a relationship with a goose, given that the goose is already in the picture? That is, not how do you find and adopt a goose but how do you start the interaction that results in its bonding with you?

Seek's avatar

Oh, poor Sonora. He was lucky to have you, @Coloma.

How is Marwyn handling the loss?

janbb's avatar

Sorry for your loss. Glad you had him to enjoy!

tinyfaery's avatar

So sorry for your loss. I’m sure you gave him a good life.

ZEPHYRA's avatar

Bless the little feathered soul. May he rest free of pain. You were both lucky to have crossed paths in life. I am sure he will be missed. You are so fortunate to be close to animals. Even though you have had a lot of uphill, having animals so close to you must be soothing to a certain extent.

Farewell to your angel.

Coloma's avatar

Thank You everyone, @Seek He’s okay but notices he is missing. We are leaving the barn as it is for a few days before changing things up and making Marwyns lodgings bigger, give the others a chance to absorb that he is gone. They are very sensitive to changes in their environments.
Marwyn is happily masturbating with the garden hose in his pool right now, haha spring is in the air, hormones are raging and life goes on.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’m sorry for your loss but I’m very glad that you found each other and have shared so many wonderful days and years together.

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

I’m very sorry for your loss, Coloma. I agree with everyone that you and Sonora were lucky to have found each other. You gave that guy a very pleasant eight years. Please convey my condolences to Sir Lord Marwynn, Duke of Duckworth.

Coloma's avatar

Marwyn also turns 18 this early July. He is super goose. Strong, vibrantly healthy, no joint issues, never had an injury, only one little cold and a cat scratch once. Goosing the cat was not a good idea. lol
I expect him to live well into his 20’s, maybe longer.

Coloma's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit Thank You
@Espiritus_Corvus Haha..I love that! Long live the Duke!

si3tech's avatar

@Coloma I am so sorry for your loss. He sounds like such a sweetheart, and my heart is broken for you!

Coloma's avatar

@Jeruba I won over Sonora with kindness and a floating salad bar. Like most animals, you gain their trust and use food as a motivator. The 1st night home I enticed him out of his frightened state with a big tub of cold water and a bunch of torn up romaine lettuce. The floating salad bar was an immediate hit. :-)

@si3tech Thank You, he was, he would hold his wings out and call to be picked up.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

@Coloma He looks so perfect in that photo, both posed and poised in the bucket, I didn’t realize I’d been looking at a picture of a living, breathing creature. I really thought I’d been seeing a goose statute!

What a gorgeous little guy he was. Thank you, thank you, thank you for rescuing him, treating his wounds, and giving him a safe and happy life. I know all about loving animals; I know that you get so much more than you give. Nonetheless, my heart’s filled with gratitude for you.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I’m so very glad he had 8 happy years with you. :)

Coloma's avatar

The first night saying” goodnight” to everyone in the barn and his little voice is missing. Every night, as we slide the bird barn doors shut we say” Goodnight, see you in the morning!” and Marwyn and he always answer. I have been saying that for years. Now, only Marwyn answers back. One is the loneliest number. :-(

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I still miss my kittens salt and pepper from 34 years ago. Sorry for your loss. You saved your friend from being dinner for a hawk or hunter. How are you dealing with your friend? Cremation? Burial? Or dinner?

Coloma's avatar

<——His last photo yesterday. Poor wrinkly old guy. Old geezers get wrinkly, saggy knobs. lol
sigh, always a bit of humor in everything ey?

Cruiser's avatar

@Coloma There is gratitude in his eyes for the comfort you afforded him in his last hours.

Coloma's avatar

@Cruiser You mean in his eye, he only had the one. A girl and her one eyed goose. :-(

Cruiser's avatar

@Coloma He is whole now on that great pond in the heavens.

jaytkay's avatar

Sorry to hear about your loss, Coloma, I know how sweet birds can be.

Coloma's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 He is being cremated yes.

@jaytkay Thank You/

@Love_my_doggie Yes, we do get so much more than we give. I never could have predicted that loving geese would be part of my life experience. They are very special birds.

flutherother's avatar

Sorry to hear that @Coloma. 8 years is a long time even for a human.

Mimishu1995's avatar

I’m so sorry. I know how you feel. I used to have a dog for a year and his death broke my heart. If only a year is enough for a bonding, how about 8 years? That was such a loss. RIP.

Buttonstc's avatar

It’s always so hard to say goodbye to our beloved animal companions. But when life becomes more pain than pkeasure, you did the right thing.

I know you’ll miss him dearly. What a beauty.

Coloma's avatar

This morning Marwyn and the ladies, Lautrec and Sissy and the ducks, Lucy & Fonzie were all standing around Sonoras empty stall with their chests pressed against the fence looking in on his empty space. If only animals could talk. I’m not one to overly anthropomorphize much but I swear everyone was contemplating his absence.

<—————The cheery goose barn, minus one.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’m so sorry @Coloma

Coloma's avatar

<——Another favorite picture, napping under the Mule Ears. :-)
@OpryLeigh Thanks, he is missed.

jca's avatar

My sympathies go out to you, @Coloma. I know how hard it is to lose a pet. They are truly our family members and each one is precious. Your geese have the best life and I’m sure your “Goose Angel” is watching you now and with you in spirit.

Kardamom's avatar

Oh honey, I’m so sorry to hear about this. Losing a pet is one of the hardest things in the world. I’m glad you were able to make the decision to not prolong his suffering.

Tonight I am babysitting 2 doggies. That’s what I do since I lost my dear cat about 10 years ago. I don’t think I could go through it again. I shall hug these two tighter tonight.

Next time I go to the lake, I shall think of your goose when I hear the flock a-honking.

Coloma's avatar

@Kardamom Thanks, yep, losing our little friends is never a happy time. The sting stings for quite awhile.
Coincidentally I am dog sitting 4 dogs this weekend. Nellie, Dooley, Scout and Josephine. Dogs, dogs, everywhere. haha

Aster's avatar

I’m so sad for your loss, Coloma. I wish you believed in a Rainbow Bridge they travel over to meet their relatives who have passed on . Hoping you feel better quickly and enjoy the memories .

Kardamom's avatar

@Coloma Dogs can help the healing process, that’s why I always like to have some around. Got 2 in my house right now.

Coloma's avatar

Sonoras tiny box of cremains was ready for pick up today. Look how tiny it is in my avatar. RIP dear, sweet boy.

Kardamom's avatar

I’m virtually holding your hand right now.

Coloma's avatar

@Kardamom Awww…thanks. A friend gave me a silver cremation locket last week and we filled it with a tiny bit of his ashes and a little feather frond. He can rest next to my heart now. I may not wear it often but it is a great little keepsake.

Coloma's avatar

Sigh. More sad news. My favorite pet sitting dog, “Scout”, aka ” Scouty”, a wonderful 9 yr. old Catahoula hound had to be euthanized yesterday for an ongoing intestinal tumor issue and he had stopped eating this week. I was just there a week ago this past weekend and he was doing okay but his appetite was dwindling. Guess he took a turn for the worse this week. My stick chasing, follow me around the horse barn buddy and upside down bed puppy. :-(

He had an amazing life, he was “bought” for a Watermelon from a guy selling pups somewhere in Oregon and until he “retired” this last couple years, logged thousands of miles as a trail companion for his owner who packed in Elk hunters from a lodge on the Oregon/Idaho border. He was a gentleman and a braveheart all the way, encountering Wolves on trail and faithfully “scouting” the trail ahead of the pack mules and guides.
R.I.P. Scout.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

^^^ Oh, Laurie, this month of February has been much too painful for you. I’m saddened by the news about Scout. Too many losses…

Coloma's avatar

@Love_my_doggie Yes, when it rains it pours, hoping no more beloved little friends fade away for awhile.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I’m so sorry for your loss. That really piled on quickly. You need a little time to rest.

Kardamom's avatar

Oh dear, I am so sorry. I take care of a bunch of different dogs and cats on a regular basis, since my own kitty passed away. They are like my own and I love them as my own. What sad news. It makes my heart hurt.
