Does Facebook serve any purpose other than providing a venue for hooking up?

It seems to me that Facebook is a thinly disguised medium for people to connect with/stalk ex-boy/girlfriends and/or keep tabs on current potential partners in high school/college. Almost all of the apps seem pointless and a waste of time. So, what exactly does Facebook provide?
