Can a CT colonography show cancer in organs surrounding the bowel?

Asked by tan253 (2948points) March 27th, 2016

I know potentially no-one on here will know. I’m asking as I’m trying to get my Dr to refer me for an endoscopy as I’m worried about my stomach.
I had a CT colonography a year ago and that showed I had a kidney stone, so I’m wondering if it could have picked up a tumour in my stomach?

Anyone know?
I did ask my Dr but he brushed over it – saying ‘yes,’ I think?

Thanks guys.

What are you trying to say? A “colonography a year ago and that showed I had a kidney stone” has nothing to do with a “tumor in my stomach” . Comments you have before show you have a concern with your stomach, including GERD and other things.
The Doctor is telling the truth.
The Doctor said “yes, I think” to your direct question about a TUMOUR being able to found in your stomach.

GERD is treatable—take an antacid or Prilosec (omeprazole) for Heartburn relief.

oh sorry my question isn’t very clear?
What I mean is ‘If the colongraphy found that I had a kidney stone then I’m wondering if it would have picked up that something was wrong with my stomach?’
I think the Dr said yes.

He brushed over it very quickly but it didn’t sound like No.
I’m paranoid and have anxiety – so I understand your frustration in your reply.
Thanks for answering though.

Your answer of “I’m paranoid and have anxiety” covers it. PLEASE work on that anxiety first!

If you had a doctor visit and the doctor was not clear with one of his responses, or you feel there was a misunderstanding, call him up and ask him again. He will clarify and it may help relieve your anxiety.

I don’t know if the scan goes high enough up on your torso to see the stomach? If it did then I believe it would see a tumor. I’m pretty sure the gold standard for a specific diagnosis is biopsy like other parts of the body, but a tumor would show up on a CT scan. Why not ask the diagnostic center if the stomach is seen in a scan for the colon? We do have a jelly here who does that sort of diagnostic work, if I figure out who it is I will send the Q to him. I’m not a doctor I’m just guessing.

CT of the abdomen and pelvis gives a wallop of radiation. Don’t go getting bunches of scans done.

Why are you worried about stomach cancer? What are your symptoms? You’re very young to have stomach cancer and you don’t live in a high risk country. Parts of Asia and Latin America have the highest risk.

@Tropical_Willie Although, the OP is a self admitted hypochondriac, her question makes sense. She’s hoping the scan saw her stomach so she can rule her concern out in her head.

I ask as I think having had gerd for this long potentially my body might have reacted badly! Also the ct scan showed that my lungs were clear. Stomach under lungs? Sorry my anatomy isn’t great. If it showed my lungs would it see my stomach? Yes you’re right @jleslie trying to be rational with my over zealous anxious mind plus I’m 40 in two weeks!!

Symptoms: just pains in my back – acid, belching and I tender upper abdomen at the start of my sternum. Plus a fear that thinking I’ve got something wrong with me is actually physically creating something.

You haven’t had GERD a long time! My dad has had it over 50 years.

If you really think you have cancer there are blood tests that can show it, too.

tan253's avatar

I had all those blood tests last year and getting them again -I think I worry too much and that really needs to be gotten on top of. Even if there WERE something wrong with me I would be a mess and not able to help my body heal as well…. @JLeslie you’ve been so calm and aware of my anxieties with all my posts so thank you so much…. I think I’m probably ok if I put my rational head on. Probably more gastritis but I will still find out ;) peace of mind counts for a lot!

I just read my report and it says ‘elsewhere non contrast appearances to the remainder of the abdomen and pelvis are normal. The lung bases are clear.’
Does that include stomach you think?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

^^^ YES ^^^ “elsewhere non contrast appearances to the remainder of the abdomen and pelvis are normal” your stomach is in your ==> abdomen

Get the GERD fixed, then you wont worry.

It is isn’t it! I know – but I figured it didn’t specifically state my stomach. Can I swap brains with someone please?!

^^It sounds good to me. It sounds like the scan would have seen your stomach, but we aren’t doctors. You can still call the diagnostic center and ask specifically about your stomach if it will make you stop wondering.

I understand worrying about something medical and feeling like you can’t get a straight answer. I’m not like you in the sense that I almost never worry that what is wrong might be cancer or killing me. I am like you in being uncomfortable, even anxious, when something is wrong and doctors seem to not be listening to me and not seem to care about getting to the source of my problem.
