Can you suggest some "Fifty Shades of Gray" authors?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) March 30th, 2016

I loved the Fifty Shades books and now I am looking for other authors that have written books along that same line.
Any names come up?

Might enjoy the True Crime section. I’m sure you can find tons of stories of people who gaslighted and raped some naive women.

I don’t like porn.

Seek's avatar

That’s not porn, unless you are a serial killer.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh. I’ve never read it. I’m all into books about science and history and silly stuff like that.

If you want to read popular fiction with a good amount of smut, try Harold Robbins. May be hard to find his books that were paperback best sellers in the 60s and 70s, but they definitely had some hot action in them.

Oh. How about The Valley of the Dolls? I’ve never read it, but I’ve heard it was hot.

Oh! Lady Chatterly’s Lover. Never read it, but I’ve heard it was hot.

Clan of the Cave Bear series. I liked the first book best because it had a lot of pseudo science in it. The following books were still readable, but they devolved great deal into Ayla and Jondolar and their hots for each other. She tried very hard not to use the same descriptions twice, which is to say she was very creative. Hilariously so, in many cases. Stephen King once said described it, “Ms. Aule’s randy cave people”

War & Peace has a scene where he slams her up a door. Or wait….was that The Godfather? I forget. You’ve seen one smut, you’ve seen them all.

@Dutchess_III That was the Godfather, Sonny hitting on a bridesmaid during the reception.

That’s right. I remember. It was traumatizing as hell. I was 13 years old, and alone at the movies!

Well if you are looking for an alternative to Fifty Shades of Grey. I would suggest a book called Grey by E L James

It is basically Fifty Shades of Grey, told from the perspective of Christian Grey.

Henry Miller has written several books you might check out. Tropic of Cancer. Black Spring. and several others. He’s kind of ‘Beat Generation’ oriented.

Anne Rice has written a few pretty racy stories under the pseudonym Anne Rampling and/or A. N. Roquelaure including Exit to Eden, Belinda, and The Sleeping Beauty series.

What is it that you like about those books? Is it the BDSM type theme? Is it something else? I’ve never read them but I know what they’re about. It would help to know what aspect of the books appeals particularly.

jca's avatar

You can find that type of fiction on websites, if that’s an alternative for you rather than books.

Not in good conscience, no.

In case you are looking for the romance aspect, how about trying the Twilight series? They are said to be the inspiration of Fifty Shade of Grey. (Really, Fifty Shade was originally a fanfic of Twilight)

SecondHandStoke's avatar

No, I can’t.

Because Fifty is hokey, unrealistic amateur night BDSM crap.

I seriously suggest the nonfiction The Loving Dominant if you really give a damn about the rich, real world realm of D&S.

trailsillustrated's avatar

What @SecondHandStoke said. I had to read the question twice to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. omg

And @Dutchess_III, yes it’s pretty well understood that these and other books mentioned here are poorly written twaddle, and I did feel some bile rise, but “science and history and silly stuff like that”. C’mon, you are a nicer person than that.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@trailsillustrated what? Why would your bile rise because I like science and history and silly stuff like that?

trailsillustrated's avatar

No, I apologise, I meant, well, 50 shades of grey. Science and history and silly stuff like that stuck my ear as condescending relevant to these type books, but I think it is my mistake.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, some people think I’m nuts. They don’t understand how I can be “entertained” by reading some of the things I do. As a kid I’d pull encyclopedias down and read them cover to cover.

MooCows's avatar

For those of you that thought that “Fifty Shades of Grey” was
only a nasty porn book then you obviously got nothing else
but that out of it. The book had an inner story line about “why”
Mr. Grey had the personality he did and that was the part i
most enjoyed… thank you.

I’m sure there’s a really good reason Albert Fish liked to eat small children, too.

trailsillustrated's avatar

Fifty shades is not porn and that is not really what we are talking about. It is a poorly written vapid attempt to bring a certain lifestyle into the living rooms of the suburban mind.

MooCows's avatar

To each his own..I was entertained while reading it.

Stinley's avatar

I haven’t read 50 Shades but I have read Jackie Collins books which have plenty of sex, as do Harold Robbins’ as mentioned. Who remembers Lace by Shirley Conran? The original bonkbuster

You guys come up with the funniest terms! :D
