Have you ever experience sleep paralisis ? I have?

Asked by Tinbobtina (86points) March 30th, 2016

I’ve experienced the ‘old hag’ syndrome a couple of times. I was in my bed and I thought I was wide awake when I felt something leaning on me and coming ever so close to my face. Like a dark being. I could not move and I was frightened. I was trying my best to shout my hubby’s name but the words wouldn’t come. On another occasion I felt like something was pinning my hand to the pillow and again felt like a dark figure was there. I tried my best to shout ‘Piss off!’ To it to make it disappear . This was early morning and quite light in the room. Again I was frightened.

Oh lots of times, its quite freaky actually ha ha. I’ve experienced exactly what you describe there, as if there was ghost touching my body. Our bodies and minds get tired and our perceptions get a bit screwy.

Its best to just turn from left to right and shuffle your legs up and down gentle to stimulate some alertness. Don’t worry about it, its natural.

They say it can run in families and my sister has experienced it. I never spoke of it for years until I realised that lots of other people know what I’m on about. I can’t move at all so I just try to shout out instead. I’ve heard some people hear a voice. I hope I never do.

@Tinbobtina Sometimes going to bed earlier can help. So you fall asleep before you are too tired.

Were you half-asleep?

I know people who have been unable to move in the half-asleep state, and found it terrifying. And I have felt approached by something like a shadow being I was certain was there next to me, but I was able to move, and I moved to attack it, but it wasn’t material, so mainly I freaked out the person sleeping next to me!

The body often gets cut off from conscious control during sleep so we don’t do things in the physical world based on our dream thoughts, but that can get out of sync in either direction (paralysis, or sleep walking). The dark being might be something else, or it might be a nightmare. I know a shamanic dream instructor, so personally I’d consult them (dodges skepticism barrage).

It is not a regular occurrence, but I have experienced sleep paralysis. For me, it was not the “old hag,” but a series of ominous shadows moving across the room. The other occasion was a shadowy/dark figure looming over me. I desperately wanted to move and call out for my spouse, but of course I could not do either of those things. It’s pretty terrifying.

Yes. It’s awful.

Yes to the paralysis bit but not experienced a ghostly figure. I also have the opposite in that I have dreams where I am thrashing about and shouting in my bed. Very disturbing for my husband.
