Is 9 years old too young to know about masturbation? (NSFW)

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) April 15th, 2016

Explicit sex ed book causes controversy at Oregon elementary school

Sex ed book approved for 10 year old’s seen by some children as young as nine and prompts a firestorm.

LOL! Boy babies are especially good at finding their gentiles at about 3 days of age! Or hell, maybe in the womb. What goes from there is just whatever feels good.

@Dutchess_III What about Jewish boys? (Read for the typo.)

OH NOES STOP THE WORLD AND LET ME OFF!

Most children masturbate, whether they know what they’re doing or not.

Let’s be honest, that’s why this toy still exists. They even make an adult version

BUSTED OUT LAUGHING! Oh, thanks for pointing that out, @janbb! Sorry for the typo, but not really! It’s the second time I’ve laughed that hard this morning. This is the first, and it is even kind of relevant. :D

@Seek I don’t think it was invented specifically for that purpose but I can see it going there.

Several years ago our town increased taxes to put in a new pool. Not just just a cement pond filled with water of the type where I spent every day of every summer when I was young. Oh no. It had to be some sort of super duper water fantasy world. One of the things they incorporated were jets of water that shoot up at intervals, at the beginning of the wade in. The last time I was there there were two kids standing in two different spots, legs slightly spread, waiting for the water to shoot up. I wondered what the designers were thinking. Could they not see that coming?

@Seek that genuinely hadn’t occurred to me. I’ll never be able to look at one of those things again with my former perspective.

I’m not sure it worked the same for boys, @stanleybmanly. There’s no way thinking about it doesn’t make my nuts ache.

Well I don’t think it’s too much of a bad thing for them to figure that out for themselves. I didn’t get sex ed until I was 12 and I turned out fine. But if it’s just a matter of making the information available to them, it’s not going to kill them.

Many kids these days are hitting puberty at 8.

However, if you are fine with people not learning to drive until a few years after they get their drivers license, I suppose waiting until middle-school makes sense.

I discovered Playboy around 8 or 9. I was fascinated by the female form. Still am.

The books, per the link, were intended for older elementary school kids. Those kids left the books on a table and a younger grade discovered them. The fact that some of the kids that inadvertently saw the books were 9 years old caused the brouhaha.

I discovered Playboy around the same age, @flip86. I was fascinated too. Then I turned into one and lost all fascination.

Of course not. Way too many young children still believe that something is “wrong with them” because they have perfectly common sexual urges.

No, nine is not too young to discuss masturbation with children in an age appropriate way. Masturbation is a natural behaviour, and by nine most kids would have discovered touching their genitals is pleasurable, even if most are not actually masturbating. I recall having a conversation with my son about it at a very young age. As I recall it was something like I knew it felt nice to touch his penis, and it was fine for him to do that, but it was something to do in his private time, not when other people were there. At nine I’d be happy to have a more in-depth conversation about what masturbation is and why most healthy people do it at least at some point in their life. Making masturbation a taboo topic, is not a wise thing to do.

These days when sex equals a trip through the neighborhood on a skateboard, i guess not.
