What's the most dangerous topic to discuss here?

Asked by DoNotKnowMuch (2979points) April 29th, 2016

Guns? Cars? Politics? Religion?

I feel as though occasionally we stumble upon something that triggers some raw emotions in people, and I didn’t see it coming. Do you know of one that might be just too difficult to talk about here?

I had one question deleted 4 years ago , about time travel forwards and backwards in time.

JLeslie's avatar

Medical problems.

Mariah's avatar

The most hurtful thing that’s happened to me here was in a discussion about health insurance politics.

si3tech's avatar

Sex, politics.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

All of it. Flutherites are not afraid to express their opinion. This is why I respect the people here, even if we don’t always agree.

DoNotKnowMuch's avatar

I’m considering discussing toilet paper rolls – under or over – but it could be too much. I believe we’ve had this discussion in the past, but it’s been a long time. Maybe next week.

janbb's avatar

I think the toilet questions are being done to death here this week, but in general, I feel the most incendiary topic is religion.

cookieman's avatar

Roasting a goose for Christmas.

ibstubro's avatar

Women’s rights.

It’s about the only topic left on Fluther where you can get ganged up on by a solid block.

Some years ago, a young man wanted to change his first name and asked a question about how to do so. He didn’t ask for anyone’s opinion; he wanted to know how one legally changes his/her name. Many people jumped in and lectured him that he should learn to love his name and never change it. The responses truly amazed me. Nobody knew his name or why he’d want a new one. It all seemed so presumptuous to me; the guy just wanted to learn about Probate Court.

Coloma's avatar

I was going to say religion and Donald Trump but @cookieman sinks it. Threaten to roast my goose I shall have your head in a basket. lol

- dark chocolate vs milk chocolate?
– mobile phones?
– walnuts or no walnuts in chocolate chip cookies?
– floss first or after brushing?
– red or white wine?
– paper or eBook?

Mimishu1995's avatar

From my observation, no question seems to hit people’s nerve as much as those that question Fluther’s community. You know, the ones that are similar too “Why is Fluther so unhelpful?”

Coloma's avatar

Oh…dream interpretation..gah!

CWOTUS's avatar

It’s not so much questions themselves that cause rifts and problems, but attitudes, or at least “perceived attitudes” among respondents that cause others to ridge. By that I mean responses that are dismissive of others’ opinions and feelings, or which tend to categorize others in ways that they feel to be hurtful.

Straw man arguments of all kinds, where a jelly’s argument gets misconstrued and cast into a totally unrepresentative simplification, and then that simplification is argued against, as if that was the original jelly’s position, causes untold pissing and moaning. Likewise, gross misrepresentations of others’ positions on sexual preference, religion, climate change, economics and politics cause major rifts.

Questions asked in good faith about even highly controversial topics do not generally, in and of themselves, cause problems. But it’s also hard for some jellies to ask a pointed question “in good faith”, since their biases are so clearly evident in the wording of the question – and their quick rejection of any opinions to the contrary – that those threads seem to just die from lack of participation.

Some questions, on the other hand, seem to generate a ton of sly and sometimes very broad ridicule: “Does he like me?” “What does it mean when she looks at me and then looks away?” “I dreamed of him; what does that mean?”

SecondHandStoke's avatar

Firearms.

Technically speaking.

johnpowell's avatar

Feline circumcision and pizza.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

^^^ My cat would have died without a perineal urethrostomy. If feline circumcision is flame-bait, I guess I must be ashes by now.

- toilet paper over or under? don’t care, maybe over
– dark chocolate vs milk chocolate? neither, dark chocolate if I had to chose
– mobile phones? no, telegraph…?
– walnuts or no walnuts in chocolate chip cookies? No walnuts
– floss first or after brushing? after brushing
– red or white wine? neither, white if I had to chose
– paper or eBook? paper

Keep them coming. I love stirring the pot.

johnpowell's avatar

????

floss first or after brushing? after brushing

WTF? This is like sweeping after you mop.

How is this even debatable?

stanleybmanly's avatar

Blood type questions. I don’t know about dangerous, but annoying as hell. Did anyone here ever have an answer as to why were plagued with them for awhile.

alcanzox's avatar

Personal views.

Buttonstc's avatar

Not so much lately, since a lot of those with a supercilious attitude are no longer around, but in the past religion has been a minefield with many explosions.

I used to have a strict policy, for myself, of not participating because it was pointless.

Coloma's avatar

Well of course, regardless of topic, it is always best when only the nice people answer. lol

JLeslie's avatar

@DoNotKnowMuch Toilet paper over or under has been discussed more than once on Fluther.

ucme's avatar

Fat liberal stay at home americans with little intellect & way too much time on their hands, key demographic

DoNotKnowMuch's avatar

@JLeslie: “Toilet paper over or under has been discussed more than once on Fluther.”

You’re right. And since it was decided that over is the objectively correct way, we needn’t discuss it further.

DoNotKnowMuch's avatar

@dammitjanetfromvegas: “Spanking”

True. This reminded me of some of the discussions we’ve had here. I tried to find an old thread to post it, but couldn’t find one.

JLeslie's avatar

Exactly right. Over. Lol.

cookieman's avatar

@Coloma: Here, goosey goosey…

@DoNotKnowMuch: Definitely “with walnuts” for chocolate chip cookies — @cookieman has spoken.

Cruiser's avatar

Global warming and hand size.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Definately religion & politics. In my opinion when those questions are posed, people with different theories are attacked with abusive language. I left for a long time since I have little tolerance for ignorance like that, and I was beginning to feed into it, which is not me. I learned so much through those discussions though, I can’t say they don’t serve a purpose. Sometimes you get the most honest answers during high emotions, that’s very enlightening.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Cruiser hand size?
@KNOWITALL Good to see you back, politics is only dangerous here if you’re not a raging liberal. Religion is only dangerous if you are religious.

Rarebear's avatar

Circumcision

janbb's avatar

@Rarebear True. I didn’t have the foreskin – err, foresight, to think of that one.

Brian1946's avatar

Ted Nugent’s comment about what he would do if Obama won reelection, created some paranoia, fear, and loathing about 4 years ago.

However, Obama’s reelection and Toad Nougat are now both moot topics.

SmashTheState's avatar

@Brian1946 And yet, the people who made a Viet Nam war veteran flee Fluther in fear for himself and his wife being turned in to the secret police for expressing an unpopular view are still here, and still driving away anyone who questions the groupthink.

To answer the question, the most dangerous topic to discuss on Fluther is Fluther. Any criticism of Fluther’s orthodoxy incites an instant and vicious wolfpack of ME TOOOOs, with tacit approval from the site’s Ministry of Truth enforcers.

edit: See what I mean? Almost instant attack, so fast that I have time to actually edit this into the original comment. No criticism of Fluther allowed.

janbb's avatar

Someone pass the toilet paper.

dammitjanetfromvegas's avatar

@Smash Capt. Harley, right? I remember when that happened. It was disgusting what happened to him. He was a good man.

SmashTheState's avatar

@dammitjanetfromvegas Yes. It was the second time for him. Someone on Facebook had called the feds on him, resulting in a visit at his door from the Secret Service, terrifying his elderly wife. When people here threatened to do the same thing again, he couldn’t afford to take the chance. He had to delete his account and leave.

At the time I tried to explain to people here that certain people (like Harley, who was a Viet Nam war vet, or me, being a well-known anarchist shit-disturber) get extra attention from the State, and that someone informing on us to the secret police – even if totally unfounded – can result in having our computer seized, criminal charges, bugging, surveillance, and worse. People told me to “take off your tinfoil hat LOLLLL.”

Cruiser's avatar

“FLUTHER”….(puts his hands out waiting to be shackled and dragged away)

Discussing Trump and his chances of winning is still a 100 times more likely to get you tasered or your AARP card revoked than talking about Floofer.

ucme's avatar

Amazing that so many treat a tiny Q&A site, hiding in a dark corner, of the internet so seriously
The much lauded “community” aspect appears to have been mistakenly abused, by some, as a pathetic hunting ground for sad bastards who really need to give their heads a wobble

NerdyKeith's avatar

Politics and religion are usually quite heated topics. But just so long as you don’t lower yourself to personal attacks, its usually fine.

Moderators had to delete responses to some of my questions, because of personal attacks. Just stick to the topics and don’t get bitter is my advice (not directing that at anyone particular)

dammitjanetfromvegas's avatar

waiting for @ucme to complain about not getting a great answer~ :)

CWOTUS's avatar

You might have to wait a long time for that, @dammitjanetfromvegas. Has he done that yet – ever?

Carstairs may have, on his behalf, but has he?

ucme's avatar

Ahem, I have no clue where that came from @dammitjanetfromvegas, came like a pigeon shitting on your head…out of nowhere
My post was in support of the Harley guy having been hounded out of here, which you yourself commented your disapproval on

@CWOTUS Carstairs gave me the only great answers I care about, at his interview

dammitjanetfromvegas's avatar

I was teasing @ucme because there have been numerous times that he mentioned he didn’t get a great answer. I’m not making this up. I just thought it was funny because he always complains about the complainers, yet he complains about silly things as well. He’s a big boy, so I thought he could take the teasing.

ucme's avatar

Way to talk about someone like they’re not there & get it all screwed up at the same time.
If she’s going to tease at least get it right, i’m only ever teasing or taking the mickey whenever I mention ga’s, considering my well documented disinterest of all things related to the “lurve” system.
As for always complaining, i’m afraid she definitely is making this up, maybe it suits her to do so for reasons known only to herself, been bottling that up for a while have we?

Cruiser's avatar

Oh I have seen this many times before….it appears much of @ucme wait staff has quit again and created a mood of severe discontent….An emergency care package is in order…let’s all pitch in…I will offer up a Giordanos Frozen Pizza, some freeze dried Starbucks Coffee, and a Peoples magazine.

ucme's avatar

Haha, the only discontent appears to be coming from the usual previously offended sources.
Amuse me some more with your insanely predictable pontifications, missing HC are we? :D

dammitjanetfromvegas's avatar

Methinks someone cares about this place more than they’re willing to admit. :D

ucme's avatar

Medication kicked in has it?
Thought so, the most passive aggressive, wildly inaccurate post i’ve ever seen on here & that takes some doing.
I’m referring to her bewildering initial post that began this tedious little interlude, little people hiding behind keyboards with nothing to do but feast on their bullshit theories, pathetic.

cookieman's avatar

@ucme: Just to be clear, did you use a keyboard to post your “bullshit theory”, or were you instead hiding behind one of your many servants who was typing it for you??

How ‘bout you settle down a smidge?

Cruiser's avatar

It was just me….I hacked @ucme account and wrote all those cwazy whack-a-doodle things…just acting out on a Friday night.~ can somebody get me a glass of warm milk?

Strauss's avatar

@ucme Fat liberal stay at home americans with little intellect & way too much time on their hands, key demographic

Well, let’s see…fat? Not since I retired and was unchained from my desk; liberal _? No, I’m way too progressive to be a liberal; _ stay at home _? Yes, since I retired I do spend a lot of time at home; _american? Yes, due to my grandparents’ immigration; with little intellect? I’ll let the reader be the judge, check out some of my other posts; way too much time on their hands… not usually; I guess that eliminates me from the “key” demographic

CWOTUS's avatar

Add “Shooting gorillas in zoos” and “Free college” to the list…

ibstubro's avatar

What’s up with this? ^^^
Someone PM me if necessary?

Strauss's avatar

—@ibstubro, I’m not sure what the “free college” reference is all about, but here’s a link about the gorilla.

ibstubro's avatar

Thanks, @Yetanotheruser.

I eventually caught up with the gorilla Q’s.

janbb's avatar

Baked beans apparently. Go know!

ibstubro's avatar

Well, we knew it was a potentially explosive topic, @janbb.
