Where is Osama binLaden?

Asked by Amurph (401points) July 28th, 2008 from iPhone

I just finished reading ‘The Looming Tower’ by Lawrence Wright (I’d recommend it, it was a fascinating read)

So where do YOU think binLaden is? Think he’s still alive? Think he’ll ever be caught?

I have absolutely no way of knowing any of those things.
But hey…if we can find Saddam in a hole in the ground in the middle of the desert, I suppose we should be able to find Osama.

I’m pretty sure that if someone on Fluther knew where bin Laden was, then he would have been caught by now.

he is in Kansas!

Bin Ladin is camping out in Crawford TX at the Western White House waiting to Surprise us in October. John McCain will hunt him down and shoot him out of a tree and lynch him, and become our next President. (cringe)

A google search of Bin Laden dead, brings up some interesting articles.

Fox News: Report: Bin Laden Already Dead
Is Osama bin Laden dead?

I do not know if he is dead or alive. Regardless, he is nothing but a symbol for the “war on terror,” dead or alive.
The head of the CIA Bin Laden Unit, Michael Scheuer, has some interesting things to say while on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Did the Bin Ladin Family have a business relationship with the Bush family? (I use the term “family” loosley,)

He is alive. I am pretty sure he is in the mountains in Pakistan in the tribal area. This area is lawless. It is an ideal hangout since there is no law and he is a great following with people that do not like to follow the law. Pakistan simply does enough anti-terrorism to keep the US happy. He knows they are never going to put tons of troops in that area to look for him.

”... people who do not like to follow the law.”
It’s not that they don’t “like to” follow the law; those mountain people are not much affected by Pakistani law, never have been, but because of geography, not temperament.
The people who live out there “like to” live within tribal laws and do so. Read Rory Stewart, The Places in Between.

Yep, most likely in Pakistan- in the FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas). This is a part of Pakistan that is not really under the central government control. The ethnix pashtun in this area don’t see eye to eye with either the Pakistani or Afghani governments. They generally beleive that both governments are illegitemate. Speculation has placed Usama in Warizistan, Chitral and many other places within the FATA… but no westerners know for sure.

Osama Bin Laden will be alive as long as a figurehead for the War of Terror is needed.

Peace In,

thanks for all of the factoids, especially the articles. Are there any other good writings on the matter, particularly from “independent” news outlets people can recommend?
