How could they get "dropping out of the presidential race", from "suspending the campaign"*?

Asked by flo (13313points) May 8th, 2016

The Google search result shows some got it wrong. How? Is it the same way that they say Mr. Obama instead of President Obama and/or Mr. Cruz instead of Senator Cruz, etc.?

They drop out of the presidential race by suspending their campaigns.

What’s difficult about that?

If they’re no longer campaigning, they’re no longer in the race.

They mean the same thing.

Because that’s what suspending the campaign means.

it has to do with money. If the suspend, they can still collect money because they may eventually ‘unsuspend’.

If they call off the campaign, then they can’t collect money any more, and they may have to pay some back.

@elbanditoroso has it right.
By suspending the campaign, they can continue to raise money.

@flo It’s called “mental gymnastics”.

flo's avatar

Yes, mental gymnastics is right. I don’t know about kasich but Cruz,s name is still on the balot right?

flo's avatar

…Kasich also only suspended the campaign he hasn’t not dropped out.
So, what does it mean that so many news outlets get it wrong? Is it North Korea or the group in Syria and Iraq?

There names still still appear on the ballot because they’ve already filed, months ago, the necessaries to run in each state. Once that stuff’s been filed it doesn’t change, no matter if the candidate is still running or not. Campaigns are “suspended”, not “ended” because there’s shit tons of election and campaign finance laws that regulate political campaigns, which then have to be sorted through and dealt with by the folks who run the campaigns. But when someone “suspends” their campaign that means they’ve effectively dropped out of the race.

And what in the blue hell does North Korea, Syria and Iraq have to do with anything?

flo's avatar

@Darth_Algar But when someone “suspends” their campaign that means they’ve effectively dropped out of the race.” But couldn’t that be wishful thinking talking?

flo's avatar

I think you answered the question about “Is it North Korea or the group in Syria and Iraq?” with your “what in the blue hell”

Darth_Algar's avatar

Alrighty then…..

@flo But couldn’t that be wishful thinking talking? So it would seem!

…. @Darth_Algar “Effectively” is not good enough for journalism, for reporting just the facts please.

I was referring back to the original question in light of recent news about Sen. Cruz’s “suspended” presidential campaign.
