What do you know about "drop foot"?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) May 11th, 2016

10 days ago I was in the ICU with my mom. When she had her tumor excised, she developed drop foot on her right side. When she walked he gait was like a marionette puppet with her foot dragging.

Fast forward to 10 days ago when she wound up in ICU because of how beat up she was from the chemo and radiation. The nurses suggested we work her limbs if we were bored to help keep musle tone up. So I stood at the side of her bed, put her foot in my chest and had her do leg presses. I did this for 2 days and on the second day….I was sitting in the lounge and when I stood up my right leg was numb and I had her exact drop foot on the same side. Now I was walking like her. I was surprised and confused.

After a couple days it seemed to get a little better. Last night I went for a walk with the dog and I again could hear the plop…plop of my right foot. This am I felt a little numbness in my right cheek.

I got worried and called my Dr. and do have an appointment to see him tomorrow.

My vital statistics is I am STRESSED about lots of things in my life the number one right now is my mom dying on Mon. I had to cancel my flight to got to her funeral because of these symptoms cropping up today and a few other things I could do without. Blood pressure is up no surprise there.

My brother and sisters are screaming at me to go to the ER now…my doc says an office visit tomorrow is in order.

Anyone ever deal with anything like this before? Again don’t yell at me to go to the ER….had that enough times today.

I’m sorry I don’t but can I give you a big hug? Keep us updated and take care.

I’m sorry about your moms passing @Cruiser and, of course, not being a doctor, but…it could be a stress related, sympathetic psychological response to your moms condition but, you do need to be seen asap. If your private physician is not telling you to go to the ER you can, probably, safely wait until tomorrow. It could be nothing, it could be something. Please let us know, we love you dude!

One sided numbness can be a stroke, get you to a doctor.

I’m so sorry.

Thank you @Coloma. I am an empath….most people will not have an understanding of what that means and that was the first thing that crossed my mind was that I did infact transfer her drop foot into me. I have been trying cleaning rituals that do seem to help and it was all but gone until yesterday when it cropped up again. But with all the symptoms do correlate with potential stroke issues, my high blood pressure etc. Will look closely at this for sure.

Thank you for the hug @janbb!

Is it at all possible the foot is going to sleep? I have a habit of sitting with my legs crossed, or tucked up under me. I try to remember not to do that, because shit goes to sleep, and if I stand up without realizing it, I then fall down. I do have to drag my foot for the first several steps.
Does it go away after you walk for a bit?
I kinda wish you’d go to the ER. But I’m not going to say that.

I know that there’s nothing more troubling than having medical symptoms and not knowing the cause.
AND… There’s nothing more calming than hearing a licensed medical doctor say, “Relax, it’s nothing serious.”

I could not more strongly suggest that you see a doctor. Chances are he’ll say, “Relax, it’s nothing serious.”

@Dutchess_III I have had this 10 days now and symptoms were all but gone for days. I have a feeling it is stress related as I hate to fly and was scheduled to fly out tomorrow for my moms services. After today’s flare-up I pulled the plug on the trip as I did not want to be 1,200 miles and 6 days removed from my doc. Told the sibs I won’t be coming….they understood. Took an Ativan and I feel almost normal now.

@Pachy I appreciate yours and everybody’s concern….I am concerned too and will be at the Docs getting a looksy as to what might be at play here.

I am so sorry that you lost your mother. Hugs.
I would prefer that you go to the ER but if you are comfortable waiting until tomorrow, then I think you will be fine.
Please give us a follow up.

My condolences on your loss. If the doctor says tomorrow, okay, but do you have anyone with you in case something occurs today? Best to be near family or friends that know signs of a stroke and who can call for an ambulance if necessary.

Prayers and wishes for your health.

Cruiser's avatar

@zenvelo I am at work and told my Secy’s all of what is going on and they are constantly checking in with me. I will be at home with the wife and family later. Should be covered 24/7

@Cruiser, as a Baby Boomer who, with each passing birthday, discovers new WTF symptoms, I thoroughly commiserate with you and am sending you positive vibes.

Damn, so sorry about your mom after all she and you went through. I really am sorry she didn’t hang on a couple of years longer. Your issue could be because of the huge amount of stress and pressure you are under. My husband and I are caring for his elderly and bedridden mother and believe me( strange as it may seem ) we have both been experiencing arm numbness and other symptoms that make us think that we are going through strokes or heart attacks. Stress can lead to terrible panic and physical issues. Take care and keep honoring your mom’s memory.

I’m sorry you’ve lost your mum too @Cruiser. You’ve had a tough few weeks. Not surprising you’re stressed. Let us know what your doctor says. If you feel worried go to the emergency centre. It’s always better to err on the side of caution. Take care. Sending you a hug.

I’m also sorry about your loss.

As WebMD describes it foot drop is not in and of itself necessarily serious, and it can have several non-serious causes. Does any of that information in the link indicate?

I’m sorry about your mother’s passing @Cruiser ♡ The whole drop foot thing passing onto you is indeed worrisome, and whilst I hope it is just stress it’s better to be safe than sorry. I experienced heart pains and palpitations, dizziness and blackouts, all of which came down to extreme stress and anxiety after lots of tests. But you should definitely get checked as soon as possible. Sending lots of healing and positive vibes your way ♡

@Cruiser I am so sorry that you have lost your Mom, and that you are now suffering from something. I definitely think stress could be a contributor, but I echo the sentiment for seeing your doctor. Please let us know what happens.

Zen hugs!

I’m really sorry about your mom, and I genuinely hope that you’re holding up alright.

Numbness, especially if it spreads, is a pretty serious symptom (even though it, like many things, can have a frustrating amount of sources), so definitely see your doctor ASAP. In the meantime, if you develop any other serious symptoms, I highly recommend an ER visit.

I’m glad you’ll be seeing your Dr. tomorrow so you can get to the bottom of this.

I’m so sorry to hear that your Mom died so soon, but at least she had the comfort of her own home and bed.

I’m glad your sibs understand why you can’t fly out. Taking care of yourself medically is important especially with all the stress you’ve been through lately.

I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you that the tests indicate something temporarily stress induced rather than something chronic.

Let us know what you find out. We’re all pulling for you.

Heading to bed soon….had a great day and great night and I feel pretty OK….much better than this AM. Tomorrow will be a time of discovery with the doc and what ever they find I will deal with it. Thanks so much for all the care and support here. Jellies always come though that is without question!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Let us know. And don’t let them amputate anything.

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III It hardly sounded like it was gonna come to that!

Aster's avatar

I know nothing about foot drop but I assume you’ve seen a doctor by now and he has ordered a bazillion tests. Lots of thoughts of and hugs to you and let us know how you’re doing.

Cruiser's avatar

@Dutchess_III You already saw to that :P

Doc said I am clearly under stress…I don’t think you need to go to med school to make that diagnosis my wife has been saying it for years now. She used the word “Somatiztion” to connect the anxiety/depression in my brain to the foot drop experience. She gave me a thorough muscular and neurological once over…drew some blood and is prescribing something to address the anxiety/stress component she see going on in my life right now. She was very certain I had not suffered a stroke as I did not have any signs or symptoms….(relief)

I find it curious that on Monday I made the plane reservations to fly back to my moms town for the funeral services and that night the foot drop came back and Tues am I was in a full blow attack. When I told my secretary to cancel the flight and car rental by the time I got home from work the symptoms were all but gone. Today is like nothing happened. I HATE to fly and do stress for days prior to a plane trip. And flying was only one of a half dozen barn burner stresses I am dealing with. So her assessment seems plausible to me.

Thanks for all your concern words of encouragement!

Go to the lake now. Drink beer and fish.

marinelife's avatar

Great news. Time for a little R&R!

Cruiser's avatar

“Doctors orders” @Dutchess_III plus I don’t need legs to fish. :D

Coloma's avatar

Yay! Good news! Well…aside from the causes as of late.
Yep, I think some R&R a couple cocktails and a serene setting is in order. maybe head up to your lake house for the weekend. :-)

@Cruiser So happy all’s good! Hugs

DrasticDreamer's avatar

Really glad you got mostly good news. However, as someone who suffers from anxiety and has experienced debilitating panic attacks, I really hope what she’s giving you helps fairly quickly. Also, I always highly recommend meditation (guided is really good) for pretty bad anxiety. It helps me a lot. This is what I always tell people to try as a jumping off point. It was recommended to me, and it’s good, so I like passing it along.

Hope you see brighter days soon.

Cruiser's avatar

@DrasticDreamer They say it will take 3 weeks to reach therapeutic level. I have another script for when I have a “moment”. Thanks a bunch for the guided meditation list. I will give one a try after my moms services this AM.

MilkyWay's avatar

Happy and relieved it’s nothing serious! And again my condolences ♡ Take care of yourself.
