I have the opportunity to watch Outlander from its first season to current. Is is worth investing time into?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) May 24th, 2016

I’m kind of on the fence about it so I figured I’d ask for some Jelly judgement.

Is it similar to the iconic Christopher Reed film, “Somewhere in Time”?

If you’ve seen Outlander, tell me what you thought about it both positive and negative. Thanks.

I love the show. Extremely well written. And I’m not a romance guy.

As with “game of Thrones” series it is a Historical drama mixed with fiction.
Three years ago I read the books and enjoyed them immensley.
The Movie TV series somewhat diverges minor parts without affecting the story.
I enjoy watching the TV Movie of this book as do many women who are smitten by the main charater Jamie Frazer as he exemplifies the best in men.
A very good series.
I recommend it !

Well, so far that’s enough to get me watching the first episode :)

Thanks.

Anybody else want to weigh in ?

We watched the first season on DVD and thought it was well done.
Haven’t season anything beyond that though.

It’s pretty good. We call it jokingly call it Pornlander there seem to be so many sex scenes in it. It’s just started again here and I’ve not watched the next season yet.

My sister powered through the first season. And she doesn’t have much free time to watch tv.

Haven’t seen the series yet but it’s on my list. I read about the first three books of the series avidly then got a bit tired of it.

I really like it and I’m picky about my historical European dramas. I’m well into it. Last episode had me bawling my eyes out.

“Outlander” is visually beautiful and well-acted. The leading lady shines in her role and has great chemistry with not-one-but-two romantic partners.

I need to warn you, though, that the show has a heavy rape theme. By the end of Season 1, there’s a situation that I’d describe as torture-porn. I couldn’t watch some of the scenes.

@Love_my_doggie Oh – good to know.

Thanks for the heads up on the torture porn.

I really appreciate everybody’s input. And now I know what I’ll be binge watching after the seasons end for regular broadcast TV.

@Rarebear

It’s good to know that it’s well written. That’s one of the chief qualities I look for in a series.

@Buttonstc Maybe I’ll watch along with you. Have you watched “Grace and Frankie” on Netflix streaming? I thought the second season was better and deeper than the first.

I watched the first season-and-a-half with my lady, and we enjoyed the scenery and much of the historical detail and much of the acting and so on, but we were hoping it would go in other directions. We decided to stop watching at that point because of the capture/torture/rape/porn aspect, which seemed overdone. Also the protagonists seemed a bit denser than we’d like, leading again and again to more of those situations. It was a shame because there were many really good aspects to it – we almost really liked it, it was so close to something that could’ve been really great.

@janbb

I’ve heard and read terrific things about Grace and Frankie and recently saw an interview with Lilley Tomlin about it.

If possible , I’d love to fit that in this summer as well.
