Have you read any authoritative reports about the situation in Venezuela?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37344points) June 1st, 2016

Venezuela is in crisis. Much of the manufacturing sector has had to curtail production. There are pictures of grocery stores that are completely empty.

What have you read that comes from the most reputable sources that you can cite? What is going on there?

Go to the Economist web site – they’re pretty serious and authoritative. British magazine mostly reporting on business and economics. Written with a British flourish.

Several articles on venezuela in recent weeks.

Sorry, most of my news comes from the radio, so I haven’t read much.

In Venezuela, Devalued Money May Weigh More Than Whatever You Can Buy

My understanding of international politics is obviously zero, because I don’t understand how the US government can’t give the people a line of credit and start shipping excess commodities to Venezuela?

Things are pretty bad in Venezuela due to the drop in oil revenues. The latest I have heard is that some airlines are refusing to fly to the country because of problems in getting paid. The BBC is reporting on the situation as it develops.

They are struggling to pass a recall vote referendum to get Maduro out of office who 7 out of 10 Venezuelan’s blame for the countries sad state of affairs. In reality it is the drop in oil prices that is largely to blame for their economic woes.
