When was the last time you stayed up all night?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) June 12th, 2016

I have been burning the candle at both ends for the last two weeks, getting ready for important company to come last Thursday, to stay until this morning (today is the following Sunday.) It was my Dad’s wife, Kathy.

We’ve been painting rooms, fixing walls, cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, OMG, cleaning! PLUS we had a family get together at the lake on Saturday planned, so I had to plan to feed about 20 people.

Friday we took Kathy to the lake, to camp in the RV. I finally was able to get some rest there, on Friday evening. I was soooooo tired.

We stayed up pretty late, drinking beer and wine and talking. Kathy went to bed at about 1, Rick and I turned in at about 2:00. We crawled in bed. About 3 minutes after I got in bed I pulled the sheets and blankets up over my head because that’s what I do. Almost instantly I started sneezing and sneezing. I must have sneezed 15 times. Then I could feel my nose swelling, so I couldn’t breath through it. Then I felt my throat swelling and it scared the shit out of me. I had to get out of that RV!

So I got out, and went and sat by the fire. Almost immediately I felt everything starting to relax and I could breath again, but I was really scared, terrified, to go back in to bed, so I sat by the fire all night. Watched the sun come up and listened to the morning birds doing their thing.

I was up all night and all the next day.

I had a pretty hard time functioning Saturday, especially with all the food prep, but I made it through, until was able to go to bed, at home, in my own bed, at about 1 a.m. last night / this morning.

Not sure how I survived that! I haven’t stayed up all night since I was a teenager.

When was the last time you stayed up all night, and why?

I did in 1964 with my fiancee. The time just flew by; I had no idea it was 5am. Didn’t feel at all tired. If I tried it now it would take me two weeks to recuperate. I can’t spell , “fiancee” I guess.

Fiance. Or you can just copy and paste to get the proper ‘fiancĂ©” I think that thinger over the e makes it sound like ee.

In younger years past I’ve stayed up all night because I was having fun. But I was all by myself the other night.

Try swing shifts, every other week I get to drive all night long.

What’s your definition of “all night?” If it’s till around 4 or 5, and then going to sleep, probably a few years ago. If it’s not sleeping at all and then awake the entire next day, then I’d say about 15 years ago, going to Ireland.

Two years ago, I believe. I often did this during study periods – way before the exam, not as a panicked all-nighter.

A few months ago. Computer woes for paying customers. After about 40 hours I decided I had hit the point of inflection and was starting to do more harm by continuing.

I worked a couple of late night outages in the last month or two. They generally go from midnight to around 6 am.

I haven’t pulled an actual all nighter but..I too have been burning the candle at both ends for weeks now. I just moved into my new little digs Friday night, and jumped into action again yesterday, stuff to do, get organized, last minute shopping, errands, then friends took me to dinner. OMG.I am so tired and slept 10 hours last night. I figured I out in about 40 solid hours painting the last few weeks and various other moving tasks.

It is going to take me DAYS to feel rested again. I need to run the vacuum around but am too damn tired this afternoon. Lights out at dusk tonight.

As I get older it happens more frequently. I was up all night Thursday. Arrived home around 9:30 Friday morning. Slept til 3 pm.

The last time I went camping. On the first night, I can’t sleep a wink so I sit gazing into the camp fire, look at the stars, and dream.

2 days ago I stayed up all night on a 12 hour flight fro communist China to the U.S.A.. I had hope to get some sleep but the Chinese woman sitting next to me had the worst breath. To me it smelled like she had just eaten the flesh of a very old rotting animal carcass (far worst than BO). I couldn’t hardly breath’t at first. I kept the air on full blast and my head facing away. It was a full flight so I was stuck. I’m just now starting to feel normal again.

I was reading a book until 5:00 am this morning. Does that count?

@jca in the details I specified “I was up all night and all the next day.” I didn’t get to bed until about midnight the following day. It was about a 40 hour stretch with no sleep and working hard.

@gondwanalon that sounds so gross! I don’t understand people with bad breath. My ex boss had the worst breath. I couldn’t sit next to her. Surely someone close to them has said something at some point….?

@syz what time did you get up after that?

A few nights ago – thinking too much. However, I usually have at least a couple sleepless nights a month. I’m pretty used to it now.

Two weeks ago today, my Dad has passed away and I miss him so very much. I sat up all night and cried, and begged him to come and get me.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah, I learned of my father’s passing at about 2 a.m. I was up all the rest of that night and the next day. The day after that I was on a plane to Florida. I’m so sorry for your heartache @LBM.
