Why does my breath smell now that I am dieting?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) June 17th, 2016

I have been on this diet for 2 weeks and
suddenly my breath began to really smell.
Even when I brush my teeth it comes back.
Why and what can I do?

What are you eating?

Protein—eggs and lean meats and salads mostly.
Staying away from carbs but using olive oil on
my salads and that might be the culprit.
The olive oil keeps me from snacking.

Ketosis

^^^ Yes, ketosis. Your diet is low/no-carb, so your body’s releasing ketones. Flossing, brushing, and mouthwash won’t eliminate the odor, because it’s metabolic. If you’re self-conscious, you can suck on sugar-free, hard candy while interacting with other people.

Your breath may not be bad or offensive. The smell varies. Keto-breath might be a little sweet and fruity, but it can also smell like nail polish remover.

Yep, Ketosis and..be careful. A radical change in diet can lead to gallbladder flare ups too.
Too much protein is hard on the kidneys as well. Tread lightly and make sure you are getting a balanced diet.

Some complex carbs are good, some fruits, whole grains, avocados are an excellent food.
Just eat well and don’t get too hung up on the whole carb thing. Moderation is where it’s at.
A bowl of oatmeal or a serving of brown rice or beans is not the same as polishing off a bag of Oreos. haha

Increase the water intake too. That will help your kidneys but not the ketosis.

Adding to what people wrote, make sure to stay hydrated. Dry mouth can increase the problem.

I just saw the jelly above me just wrote the same thing.

It’s not 100% it’s ketosis, but most likely.

Coloma's avatar

@JLeslie Right, disclaimer, not 100%. haha

Probably because you eat a lot of unnatural food and your body doesnt know what to do with it except expel it in a noxious way.

@Coloma I won’t bother to write what else it could be. I have to write disclaimers or everyone jumps all over me. Well, not everyone, just a few who can be relentless. But, my answer here is more than just a disclaimer it’s just a reminder. Usually, something medical is what is most likely. Once in a blue moon it isn’t.

Depending on what you used to eat you might take a while to flush out the toxins that are accumulated in your body. If that’s what’s going on know that it is a good thing and it will pass.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@gbjorklu eggs, lean meats and salads are not “unnatural” foods.

Broccoli for quick results.

Once you said “low carb” my first thought was ketosis. Your body is burning fat. Read on:

If your body is burning fat, that’s a good thing. That’s exactly what most people on a diet are looking for.

Those are good links everyone. Learned some stuff.
