Does your everyday flatware match?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) June 24th, 2016

Mine doesn’t. Every so often I’ll find my self running low on some piece, like spoons (especially when the kids were young, and now, after the grandkids visit,) so I’ll just pick up whatever, where ever ~ Goodwill, garage sales.

The thing I hate, though, is I have some wimpy forks in my drawer, and only about 3 strong, manly forks. (Note to self: Must get rid of wimpy forks and replenish manly forks.)

Of course not.

Yes, all my stainless-steel flatware matches.

Until you asked this fun question, @Dutchess_III, I’d never really considered the matter. Now that I think about it, I have a thing for nice flatware. The everyday stuff’s really pretty and, as you and I have discussed before, I have a great collection of Art Deco sterling.

I strongly recommend an infusion of manly forks…the more masculine, the better. You don’t want your kitchen drawer succumbing to wimpiness. That just wouldn’t be right for anyone.

@Dutchess_III My everyday flatware matches. It is my favorite stainless steel pattern by Oneida, Minute Man. I’ve had it for years now and still love it. I have add a few spoons. Like @Love_my_doggie I really like fine flatware.

For the most part yes as our flatware is 2 sets of different make with a sprinkle of plastic spoons and forks.

My utensil drawer is an aging bachelor’s cliché! Mixed together are pieces from three wildly different, years-old collections, plus plastic utensils. I have about three times more teaspoons and forks than I use between washings, but not enough knives or soup spoons. I do have a nice sterling silver set that belonged to my parents but I never use it.

Nope. Just not that high on my priority list at all.

Wimpy is pathetic @Love_my_doggie. Roll a bunch of spaghetti on a fork and it droops, like it thinks I’m Uri Geller. Bluuu uuuu. blaht.

And I DO love your Art Deco silverware! If it was in my house, anyone who touched it would be covered in chocolate ants.

No. I have two different flatware brands and now each piece goes for at least five bucks on Ebay. It’s frightening. One brand is “Gense.”

Those are all my dishes. I got them at the dollar store. Entire lot was under ten bucks. They do match and are lovely.

When I moved last month I was so concerned about space when I was packing I put all my kitchen stuff on the curb. I wasn’t sure of the size of the van she was bringing.

Nope. Neither do my cups, plates, bowls or mugs. I have favorite weights of flatware, too, but I tend to prefer the lighter/daintier ones. My husband likes the heavier pieces.

Yes, but this is at least the second set of everyday flatware. The good stuff rests in a big wooden box that looks like an ammunition caisson from a Civil War gun carriage. When the kids were around, the everyday utensils would gradually disappear, and we’d raid the caisson for gang events exceeding 8 or so guests. But the wife was rigorous in regimenting the return of the “sacred silver” to the chest immediately upon washing. The current set of flatware I picked up at Costco some 10 or 15 years ago. I couldn’t believe it when I found it there. Oneida and service for 12 at less than 150 bucks. Such a deal!

Love_my_doggie's avatar

@johnpowell That really is a beautiful collection. If I’m following your post, you bought these dishes post-move, after you’d left all your kitchen items curbside? Fresh beginnings are fun.

Nooo! We have some matching flatware, and lots that does not match.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Yes, it all matches. And if you wish, we’ll probably give it to you. Both the forks and knives come in two sizes: normal and MASSIVE. We never use the latter. They all like to jump off of the dishes onto the floor. The teaspoons, on the other hand, are wee petite, but that’s normal by UK standards.

If you wish, we would probably give the set to you. The SO might even be willing to pay you to take them.

We have a set of Fiesta dishes that we collected and have
used for almost 30 years..mixing and matching all the different
colors. Everyone always compliments us on them. As for the
eating apparitus ours match pretty well.

Of course the stainless flatware matches. 15 year old+ place setting for 8, and the dinner forks have 3 tines.

The are two mismatched teaspoons – one is slightly flattened on the end so it might be a sugar shell – and one mismatched salad fork.

Ohh, @MooCows! I have whole bunch of bakelite flatware made to go with Fiesta!

ibstubro's avatar

The 3 mismatched pieces are in addition to the service for 8.

I’ve got my mother’s good silver. Never use it. It’s in a lovely wooden box covered with a vintage bridge cloth.

Have a drawer full of random silverware – that’s the stuff we use most of the time. Some really good French knives in there and MCM forks from Sweden.

My favourite flatware is old Ikea – from about 25 years ago – looks like cutlery made by the Swiss Army knife company. Red with rivets. It’s my nice party flatware. Really solid stuff and look good with my regular and fancy dishes.

Forks tend to disappear around here so every now and then I buy a bag of them at a thrift store.

Yep, I just moved and bought new things. I found a cute wire caddy with a set of turquoise blue handled flatware and a colorful set of Chicago Cutlery Co. knives with red, blue, yellow and green handles and one large turquoise slasher Santoku knife. haha
Keep it simple.

No. My every day stuff is real silver, various pieces, along with a few stainless pieces.

My “good” stuff is stainless. I joke that most people use stainless for every day and silver for the fancy stuff, and I use silver for every day and stainless for the fancy stuff.

Mine did up until a year ago. When we cleaned out my mom’s place, I got her flatware, which was good because it seems that a lot of my forks and spoons have disappeared over the years.

So now I have to distinct sets intermingled. When we eat together, when the kids are home, I insist that able the utensils match. Makes the table nicer.

Stinley's avatar

It mostly matches. I bought two sets years ago (16 people) and have a lot still in use. Some rogue pieces occasionally turn up but I get rid of them. I have a holiday house so the mismatching stuff ends up there. None of that set matches.

I have a silverware set that came from my Mom’s house. She gave it to me after the divorce. It is in a wooden box. Growing up we broke it out for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
When my kids were growing up we broke it out for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
When my son was about 10 he carved his name into the box to ensure the silverware went to him, in case there was no will! Dipshit. He’s 28 now. I gave it to him a few months ago.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

@Coloma That sounds so lovely. Any chance of you posting a couple of photos? I have a passion for pretty kitchen items.

johnpowell's avatar

@Love_my_doggie :: Correct. For some perspective. I had months to prepare to move. But somehow I managed to to wake up at 10AM the day of the move. My mom had just left Eugene so I had to pack everything in 2.5 hours. I wasn’t sure how big the van she rented was so I just tossed everything that wasn’t essential (or easily replaced) on the curb. The only kitchen stuff I kept was the microwave since it was new and expensive and the panini press PnL gave me for my b-day a few years ago.

But it wasn’t a big deal since what I put out on the curb was gone in 10 minutes so I hope someone got use of the stuff. And I like shopping.
