Need your opinion about a driving question?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23119points) July 6th, 2016

I have been following a slow driver for quite some time .
A passing lane is coming up, there is just enough time to get by, but there are three cars behind me, should I let them pass first?
Or should I go for it ,and let them wait for the next passing lane?
And yes I am in my big truck.

If they are likely to hold back, expecting you to grab the chance, nobody is going to get to pass. You’re the pro and would know the odds of that better than I would.

Meanwhile, my friend, I don’t want to see you texting while driving.

If you can pass safely then I say go for it.

You are in front, you get to pass first.

My annual cross-country car drives through the US have shown me the answer to your question in Pennsylvania, every single time I go through.

If you haven’t driven the length of Pennsylvania, it’s a very hilly state, and I-80 follows those hills up and down from east to west. Despite the fact that it’s an interstate, and for that reason has to conform to certain standards regarding percentage of grade and radius of curves, it is as winding and pitched as they get, it seems. And for most of its length it consists of two travel lanes in either direction.

That means that there is essentially one travel lane and one passing lane in each direction. I always have to defer to the truckers who pass each other on that highway at tiny speed differentials, and they do that all the time, and no one seems to expect that they should do otherwise.

Tough call as I am one to always take the chance to pass but I bet those other 3 drivers are licking their chops to get into that passing lane. You have the opportunity to make 3 other drivers very happy by letting them pass first.

When I am in a car following a truck, and the truck driver decides to make that move, I feel a certain amount of angst that I will have to wait for the next opportunity, but it would be unreasonable to be angry at the truck driver. He was there first, he certainly gets to go if he wants to.

Well, go! If you don’t, and the cars pass, by the time you get to the next one there may be 3 more cars behind you.

If you don’t pass when the opportunity comes, then you’ll be stuck behind the slow driver until the chance comes again.

I ask this because when I do take it, (and remember I gross out at 63,500kgs so I can’t take off like a rocket)when those cars do get a chance to get by me as well as that slow driver they are blowing their horn and shaking their fists, like how dare I not let them go first type thing.
I just wanted some car drivers perspective on this, and I thank you for answering.

Some drivers are just assholes in all situations.

Oh and @Jeruba I have a flip phone and hate texting, my cell is OFF while driving.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ya, I didn’t think you’d do that, @SQUEEKY2.

All I have for you is put the phone down and drive.

(That was already addressed in his post above @MollyMcGuire. Look up a little…just past me…there it is. That is what I was responding to when I said, “I didn’t think you’d do that, Squeeky.”)
