What is this exchange services app on my Nexus 5x and do I really need it?

I think it allows me to use Gmail but not sure. Is it just Gmail or does this exchange service affect other parts, like calls and texts?I’d like to delete it if possible, I never use Gmail on my phone.

Correct, it is for Gmail. Specifically to use the Gmail app to connect to Microsoft Exchange emails.

Also I think Calendar and Contacts, so not only Gmail.

So I would keep it if you use your Android phone with a work or school account and you can delete it if not.

You need it if your employer has a Microsoft Exchange server for email and calendar – that is, if your employer has you use Outlook and such.

If you don’t use that, then you don’t need Exchange services. GMail will be fine without it.
