Do people see me differently in different lighting?

Asked by ionable (9points) August 1st, 2016

I noticed that in some mirrors, I look a bit different (for example, my skin may look bad or my nose might look big). I know this is due to lighting. Do people see me differently in different lighting just like I do when I look in different mirrors?

Of course.
Even the colors you wear can change your appearance.
I have a shirt that makes my eyes look vivid blue, like Paul Newman. Normally they’re closer to gray.

It’s what a professional photographer does. Find the best light to make their subject look the best possible.

Yes. And if you see yourself on video, you might think you look weird.

But each person views the world through a different ‘prism’ of sorts. Each person sees you slightly differently than others, and yourself.

It is common for people to dislike or be uncomfortable with their own recorded voice.

What we perceive is coming from inside our bodies. What others percieve is through external observation. Things look and sound different from the observer to the observed.

For instance, you sound different because you hear your projected voice almost behind its source. As your ears are basically behind your mouth. So you sound different to yourself when you hear yourself…..

Long ago I worked in a portrait studio. You quickly learn the job isn’t about film (this was long ago) and cameras. It was about lighting. Lighting and making people comfortable.

Notice how bathroom mirrors often have a row of lights at the top? That is classic butterfly portrait lighting, it fills in under your eyes (no shadows) and casts a small shadow (the butterfly) under your nose.

Here is a good review of the common portrait setups:

Lighting is a huge part of how we look in a given day or in a photo. I have some photos of me that I am hardly believe are me, and it has everything to do with the lighting and make-up.

I just saw a recent photo of a girl I knew in Jr. High and when she was younger she looked olive completed, and wavy wild black hair, and she looks just as I remember her when I see old high school photos. Cut to a photo of her done by a glam shot or professional studio and she looks like a “white” girl. I’m trying to figure out if she might have had a nose job?? If so it’s very minor work. It’s obvious lighting was used for the photo. Lighting, make-up, and hair. The transformation is incredible. She’s beautiful both ways, I only mean it looks like two different people.
