Are daily vitamins beneficial?

Asked by Sunshinegirl11 (1110points) August 12th, 2016 from iPhone

I’ve seen many studies saying they are, and many studies saying they aren’t.

I’m wondering because I’ve really been lacking energy lately, and I don’t like constantly peeing from coffee haha. I looked up on google “lack of energy” and it said vitamin B12 helps with that. I then looked up how you get vitamin B12 and every food that was listed I don’t like…

So what are your opinions on daily vitamins?

In my experience only if you are lacking a particular vitamin. If you have an iron deficiency, you should take iron supplements etc.

Your doctor can check your need for B12. My girlfriend was prescribed B12 last year. Same holds true with Vitamin D.

If you have a balanced diet and are in good health, though, a daily multivitamin is not needed.

Vitamins beneficial? Yes, everyone needs vitamins. Did you mean vitamin pills?

I don’t me to be glib, but it depends. If you eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods in adequate amounts (including a variety of vegetables and fruits and some non-vegan foods), or if you already eat fortified foods (that have vitamins added), then no, or probably no, you don’t need a vitamin pill (unless you have a medical problem).

Sometimes women don’t get enough iron in their diet, but iron is a mineral, not a vitamin. Good sources of Vitamin B12 include meat, fish, eggs, poultry, dairy products, and fortified breakfast cereals. With packaged foods you can check the nutrition label.

If you “lack energy” then you may need more rest, or maybe you are stressed-out, or maybe you are anemic (low red blood cell count).

Sometimes serious athletes are exhausted from over-training, but that doesn’t happen to most people. Some people feel weak from obesity and not getting enough exercise (low fitness level.)

Maybe your body isn’t acclimated to the hot summertime temperatures.Sometimes the heat of summertime makes people feel weak, and sometimes (if they perspire a lot) they may need more electrolytes.

You can look up the sources of electrolytes. Many women could use more calcium, which is found in dark green vegetables and dairy products or bones (chew carefully).

With vitamin pills, it’s possible to take too many. Don’t take more than the label indicates.

If your condition persists for two weeks or more or if it worsens, then see a doctor.

My doctor has recommended I take several supplements daily, based on a series of blood test results. In addition to the four prescription pills, I now also take vitamin D, vitamin C and a multivitamin. Keep in mind, I am considered to be an elderly person (age 73).

Pregnant women are frequently prescribed multivitamin pills.

@Sunshinegirl11: You should get a blood test and they should test for your vitamin levels and also your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). One out of every 6 women will have a thyroid problem in their lifetimes.

They aren’t really needed if you have a balanced diet. I mostly eat Arby’s and Taco Bell soo I take them. I consider them a cheap insurance policy.

I work inside and get very little sun. And I live in Western NY so my Vitamin D levels were low. I take Vit D supplement of 2000 unit per day to bring it to the center of the healthy band. It costs me less than 2 cents per day.

Vit D is very important, I also take a high quality b vit complex and curcumin daily.
