What is better for a 9' viewing range: 55" LG OLED B6 or a 60" Samsung UN60KS8000 60-Inch 4K?

Asked by mirifique (1540points) September 14th, 2016

I will be sitting 9’ from a TV. I ordered the 55” LG OLED and it was beautiful, but seemed a bit small for our living room. The 65” OLED is out of my price range. That leaves basically the Samsung UN60KS8000 60” 4K as the next contender. I would also save about $1K going with the Samsung. Are there others I should consider? Or should I go back to the 55” OLED?

Nine feet? A 55 inch TV is about the biggest worth while. And really, with a TV that big, the whole room is dominated by the TV to make it useless for anything else.

Two points:

1) while 4K is a technology of the future, it hasn’t gotten a whole lot of pull in the market. Cable and satellite companies are not delivering 4K and won’t for a while (bandwidth). DVD and Blu-Ray are dying and 4K isn’t going to take the place. So your only source of 4K content is over the internet. And while there is a little 4K on the internet (mostly porn) there is not much else. So making a decision based on 4K doesn’t make much sense.

2) 60” is too large. At 9’ you can’t see the whole screen.

The bigger point is that smartTVs steal your personal data – they are not good if you value your privacy. So beware.

I have a 40 inch Samsung in my bedroom and when I’m on the bed, I’m about 9 feet from the screen. It’s perfect.

Depends on other factors besides size of screen including room configuration and degree of ambient lighting. A 60” would have been a waste of money for the size of my room. What’s sitting in my average-sized room with lots of windows from two directions is a new 55” Sony 4K. I find it very easy to watch even in daytime, which lately, sadly, I’ve been doing far too much of.
