Could you give me some recommendations for a possible "humanist" tattoo?

Asked by NerdyKeith (5489points) October 4th, 2016

I’ve been considering getting a tattoo for a great number of years, but I wanted to really think about it before I commit to the decision.

I want something that symbolises me being a humanist or possibly my neo-hippy nature. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Image links would be most welcome. Thanks Jellies!

There are several variations of the “H-guy” logos from various humanist organizations:
American Humanist Association
British Humanist Association
Humanist Association of Ireland
LGBTQ Humanist Alliance

While I’d understand the hesitation to get a logo of something, I mean more to express that the “H-Guy” is about as recognizable a motif there is for Humanism as an institution. You could mock up your own version of H-Guy.

Thanks @Seek. I think what I would like would be something that is the humanist logo with a twist (if that makes sense).

I was thinking maybe something like this. Which looks like a cool play on the humanist logo. Might look cool as a tattoo.

That is really cool!

I want this myself, probably on the back of my neck. My own Scarlet A for Atheist.

Yeah that is cool, I’ve always liked that atheist symbol. I guess the thing to realise is that any images we’d find on the web would be like a reference for the tattoo artist to wok with.

How about an evolution themed one?

I also have some unsolicited advice. (Sorry! I know…)

Whichever design you do end up fancying, wait a full year before you get the tattoo. If you still fancy that design at the end of a year, then get the tattoo! If you no longer care so much for it, then don’t get the tattoo.

This advice, which has probably spared me quite a bit of regret, was shared with me a long time ago, and I thought it too good not to share with you.

Worship the gift and sanctity of your human body by not marring it with tattoos.

How about something star trek related?

The IDIC is about the perfect humanist symbol.

@Love_my_doggie: I think you misunderstood the question. He’s not asking if he should or not.

@NerdyKeith: Do you have a place on your person in mind or do you want the design first? I ask because I have six, and placement for type is a consideration. If you know what you want, a good inker can suggest where on your person would best display the design.
I don’t have any designs to recommend, perhaps design one yourself, so you know that it is unique. If you’re not very artistic, a good inker is also an artist, and can help you.
Have fun with this! But be warned, you may want more after getting the first one! ;-)

^^^ I didn’t misunderstand in the least.

I cannot give any insight into the humanist portion of your question but I can tell you that I too have been contemplating a tattoo (or tattoos) and have decided to go with ones that reflect my heritage. I am thinking of having the Liver Bird put on my right calf muscle, the White Horse of Uffington on my left scapula and the Irish Harp under my right arm on the ribs of that side.
But, I just did a DNA test and evidently I need to start thinking of a Scandinavian symbol to locate somewhere on my body.

Any help?

Valknut, perhaps?

@NerdyKeith . Tattoos are like most art. They mean different things to different people. Open to interpretation. Tattoos with meaning to the person whose body they grace don’t have to hold to any linear, or non abstract concepts.

It could be a duck, or a rainbow, or a bowl of chilli. As long as the image conjures your emotions on the subject of the symbolism you are attempting to represent.

Remember that tattoos are for you, not others. I have many, and most have deep meaning. But I rarely explain them to those who ask.

Keep in mind, that they are obviously permanent. You’re a great person, but you admittedly change your mind about things frequently. I recommend you try and see yourself in 10 years. Will you potentially still like the image then? What if your views change by then?

Choose the image, location (on your body,) and artist carefully. Maybe even get a stinsal of the image temporarily applied, and wear it for a few days first. To make sure you like it.

Either way good luck.

Peace n love.

@MrGrimm888 Thank you for that excellent advice. I have been thinking about having a tattoo since my early 20s and it won’t be a decision I’ll make lightly. Humanism is something I’ve always subscribed to, I’m very confident I will keep regarding myself as a humanist.

But you are correct it is always very important to give these things a great deal of thought.

^If you’re ‘blank,’ I’m excited for you. I must warn you, tattoos are kind of adictive. This won’t be your last.

You’re a smart, and thoughtful person. I’m sure you will make a good decision.

Everything I said. Great minds, @MrGrimm888

I have a tattoo on my upper back that is a Soundgarden cover, mixed with my Gemini symbol.

It symbolizes my musical birth. As that album made me fall in love with music, and I’m a Gemini, so you can probably put 2 and 2 together.

It’s a cool tat. But if you don’t know the story, it’s probably odd.

Like I said, it’s about what it means to you.

Your mind is probably better than mine @canidmajor, but thanks for the compliment.

Peace n love

Vinci’s figure of a man in a square & circle?

canidmajor's avatar

@MrGrimm888: All six of mine gave meaning, each one has to be explained. I get it. :-)
Next one is just for pretty!

MrGrimm888's avatar

GA @olivier5 . That would be a awesome tat!
I love Leonardo.

That’s what’s up @canidmajor :)

@olivier5 That one would be awesome.

@NerdyKeith what about something like this

More views of similar style maybe personalize it a little (add a beer mug or something).

NerdyKeith's avatar

@rojo
I think I might use a symbol like that but with a bit of a twist.
