Whats really going on between America and Russia?

Asked by Mr_Grimm (412points) October 4th, 2016

My fellow fluther friends, it seems that the US has suspended contact with Russia. I am not quite understanding of what’s going on. Why would we go to war with Russia? Russia is conducting a 20,000,000 people to evacuate as a ‘Drill’ in Moscow, and with a kind of slight tension we have had between Russia and the USA. I worry that tension might get worse. So what will happen? Is there a capable war we may enter? This is scary if you ask me. What makes me feel kind of better, would to add that if a country presses those buttons, so will everyone else. We are talking about destroying our planet, so basically everyone loses. What’s everyone’s input on such a matter?

@Mr_Grimm: We’re not going to war with Russia, and we haven’t complete cut off contact… We’re just no longer talking to them about the situation in Syria. They have repeatedly failed to hold up their end of agreements made regarding Syria, and so we’ve essentially given up trying to talk to them about it directly. We’re still talking to them about things like the Iran nuclear deal, Ukraine and other non-Syria issues.

I’m not sure what will happen… Who can say, at this point?

I’m not really sure about your third question, “Is there a capable war we may enter?” That question doesn’t really make sense to me.

But yeah, Russia/US tensions are pretty scary. So are China/US tensions. In fact, a lot of the world politics seem really on edge, these last few years. These are scary times to live in.

Regarding the possibility of nuclear war… That actually seems highly unlikely to me. I understand that many super powers hold onto those armaments as an end all threat… But I don’t think any of them are going to be willing to press the button first.

^Yeah. It’s just a Syria thing. The US,and Russia have had different agendas in regards to Syria since the beginning of the conflict. It would be wise for both to communicate while sharing a war zone, but communication has been shaky at best from the start. Both sides have been reluctant to tell the other about missions for fear of the information leeking into the ear of the targets. Both sides are muddying the water further.

It’s likely that the little bit of communication, and cooperation that did exist between Washington, and Moscow on this issue was over exaggerated. The only reason there was even an attempt to communicate was to try and avert our two militaries from accidentally bumping into one another. Starting WWIII over an incident in Syria would be bad.

However, both sides were never going to heed the other’s advice. Both have a different dog in this race. So ,may as well dispense with the friendly appearances.

Syria is a cluster fuck. There are way too many hands in the cookie jar there. All grabbing at different cookies. The result is the cookies will get turned to dust as the hands recklessly shuffle for gain. Once the cookies are a pile of cookie dust, most hands will be removed, leaving something nobody wants. That shell of a nation will be what’s left for those civilians who somehow survived the war.

The shit storm has no end in sight. Rebels, Assad backers, Kurds, ISIS , and other fractured groups will be fighting over the rubble for a long time, while Russia, and the US stir the shit.

Putin seems to have the most to gain if the conflict festers further. The massive flow of refugees into Europe will further destabilize the countries that Putin might see a Russian flag flying over in the near future.

Don’t worry. The US and Russia will not be going to war. Not over Syria anyway.

There won’t be a cataclysmic nuclear exchange. The world will die much slower ,and painfully.
But at least we can watch the calamity on CNN.

Things will get worse when Putin doesn’t get his man into the White House.

It won’t be a shooting war. It will be proxy war like the Cold War. We have Ukraine, Syria and the Baltics now like we had Vietnam, Cuba and Arab–Israeli conflict back then.

The cyber skirmishing will ramp up, too.

The pointless tension between the United States and Russia is just another one of the endless little gifts from our meddling in Iraq. The truth is that the smart move for America would be to recognize the situation for what it is. The only real plus to our current involvement is that the situation provides excellent training for our air crews. There isn’t a chance in hell that the ambitions of our only allies (the Syrian rebels) will carry the day. As long as Assad has Iran behind him, he will remain in power, and the wasting away of Isis will only further entrench him. The fact that Iran and Assad now have the ruthless asset of Russian air power at their service pretty much seals the fate of the rebels, and we should accept this, because we frankly have no choice.

But there is a very real danger to the festering hostilities between us and the Russians over conflicting goals in Syria, and the possibility of quick escalation of these tensions lurks continuously. It’s a truly shitty situation and another opportunity where a slip or miscalculation might well mean a quick and fiery end to all of our troubles.

It’s just Sturm und Drang, Purtin is just polishing his reputation as a strong man after the latest rigged election.

I think it’s a game of thrones. An old ancient idea of showing and flexing muscles and power in order to win the game. Unfortunately the game, the chess board, is placed in places around the world that forces others lives to act as the chess pieces.

I wish this could change.

One cannot argue with that sentiment.

The truth is simply that the outcome in Syria is orders of magnitude more significant to the interests of Iran and Russia than it is to our own. Fracking has resulted in a glut of oil that has effectively removed the entire Middle East from the plate of U.S. strategic interests. No one says it out loud, but any fool understands the truth of it. Putin’s reasoning in backing a brutal strong man as the road to stability on his Southern borders is not only sensible, it is the only thing that has EVER worked. To gain actual perspective on the situation in regards to ourselves and Russia, suppose for a moment that instead of running amok in Syria, Isis was busy siezing territory in and threatening to topple the government of Mexico.

Syria is about 700 miles from Russia.

^The implications spread farther than the crow flies.

Putin’s a bully. He looks for other bullies to align himself with. He seeks alliance with other nations that would also benefit from military expansion, through ill gotten means, with little in the way of confrontation due to military superiority.

Europe would be wise to at least prepare a standing army capable of giving them a chance. (No, I don’t count NATO’s current force as competitive with Russia .)

Syria has become a battle ground, where many are waging unchecked war, for many different agendas. The implications for Iran, Russia, the Kurds, Assad’s regime, and a half dozen middle eastern countries, and the rebels fractured groups, and ethnic parties of many different view points, and several ISIS,ISIL, and even fighters from the west are going to play a role in how the region exists /coexists with each other. The refugees from the wars will destabilize Europe (further.)

America will be frowned upon, because of their tactics (drone strikes etc.) Which will grow other hostile groups.

War won’t change any opinions. Just get a lot of kids killed.

I feel it relevant to point out that Israel has been settling areas that were Palestinian for many years now.

@Call_Me_Jay Change Mexico to Guatemala or Honduras. It doesn’t matter. The thing that matters is Russia is no more guilty of bullying or aggression in their region of the world than we are in our own. We’ve invaded more countries, propped up more tyrants, crushed more democratic uprisings than Putin can track. It is the height of arrogance and just plain myopic for the United States to hold Putin to a standard we CLEARLY do not meet.

^Sad but true.

Sometimes I don’t know how our diplomats keep a straight face when discussing such issues.

Many Americans think that America is the good guy. Taking necessary steps to abolish evil, and tyranny. America knows best,so let us blow up whomever, and whatever.

I personally wish America was neutral. That would solve SO many problems. Here and globally.
