What's up with these "Killer Clown" pranks?

Asked by ucme (50047points) October 12th, 2016

A weird craze that apparently originated in the US, Canada & Australia has now hit these fine isles we call Britannia.
For those unaware, people are dressing up as clowns & I mean scary mother fucker clowns with knives, axes & bats. They wander around when it’s dark & jump out of the shadows frightening the shite out of…& this is the worst of it, mostly young kids.

Our local police even posted a photo on their facebook page showing 2 masks & plastic fake machetes they had confiscated from a couple of 12yr olds who had “pranked” kids in a primary school.
Wondered if anyone here had experienced this first hand & if this dumb trend had occurred where you live, how long did it go on for?

I bet one virtual sausage that it is a viral marketing campaign for the 2017 remake of “It”.

I’ve yet to hear that anyone was actually harmed by these clowns.

If you go down the Halloween costumes aisle at any big-box store, there are a ton of clown-masks being sold for about $5 each. I almost bought one myself before I saw the news.

I think people need to keep their collective knickers on. It’s just friggin’ Halloween. If we can have four months of goddamn Santa Claus, we can handle a bunch of kids getting spooky for a few weeks.

@ragingloli More like fucking Purge night
@Seek Thing is, we don’t really do Halloween here, kids will go trick or treating on the night itself but that’s about it. So when these grown men jump out & deliberately scare the shit outta mothers with small kids, then I think they have a right to lose their knickers. You’re right on one count though, no one is in danger of being physically hurt except maybe the dickhead clowns, pick on the wrong target & get decked.

I’ve heard some pretty scary stuff about clowns trying to get young kids to get into cars or jumping out at them in the woods. Don’t have verification but one was a local story online.

The Jugallos are invading the UK. Hide your wives and kids.

“scary…clowns” is verbose.

Every freakin’ clown is scary. Abominable creatures, all of them. I’ve never, ever understood, not for a single moment of my life, why anyone would hire a clown for a children’s party.

Protected speech + creativity = hilarity.

I think it’s a good way to get shot. It can’t be that common down south. (US South )

My father would shoot them without a second thought.

Hopefully these kids parents stop them, before one of them is killed.

As of December 31st 2015 , there were 276,084 CWPs ( concealed weapons permits ) issued in my state (SC.)

That doesn’t count people who carry illegally, or how many have guns in there house.

Not a good place to surprise people…...

No Clowns jumping out of bushes in these here hills. In this area jumping out of the bushes on somebodies property in a Clown costume
would put you at risk for being shot. haha Yes, I have seen/read about these Clown pranksters, whatever floats your boat.

I’m waiting for one of them to get the shit beat out of them or shot or something tragic and then maybe they’ll stop their stupid shit.

Yeah it may be a prank but when you’re confronted with someone you can’t identify should they decide to harm you, then it wouldn’t be too amusing. If a mom with her little kids were out in a secluded area and were to be confronted by someone acting scary and hiding behind a frightening mask, think of how upsetting it might be for her.

Idiots. That’s really the best explanation I’ve got. At first, I thought that it was a funny prank. just people dressed as clowns walking down the street silently. Harmless and creepy. But involving weapons, lingering around schools and buses. We had one here, locally, who was hanging out by a children’s school playground carrying a knife. Pure stupidity. Something terrible is going to happen because people have to take everything to the extreme.

I blame the music kids listen to these days. This is all Marilyn Manson’s fault.

The Clown is an archetype, the Trickster; just look at the power of The Joker as an enduring symbol of chaos and disorder. As our world becomes more oppressive, the collective unconscious reacts by manifesting the Clown archetype. People feel compelled to embody the Clown, much as Heath Ledger channeled the archetypal Clown so strongly that it cost him his own life. You could call it a form of possession, people’s personalities being submerged within a primal, archetypal personality in the unconscious mind in reaction to the ever-tightening fist of humourless repression. The id never goes away, it just sublimates to new forms.

@ANef_is_Enuf Exactly what I said, if it was just someone dressed as a clown getting there rocks off on pranking folks, then no biggie. But carrying knives, fake or not onto school grounds & running at kids fucking yelling…not in my backyard dickwad.

And the worst part is, if a car pulls up, hundreds of them could get out! There’s no way of knowing! (Sorry…couldn’t resist.)

“Fools, Britannia.

The clowns traversed the waves.

Britons ne’re shall be free of these costumed knaves.”

Espiritus_Corvus's avatar

That is a damn fine way to get yourself blown away. And in Florida, I seriously doubt a jury will convict a person for shooting another person who jumps out at them from the dark armed with a knife or blunt object or anything else that could be considered a weapon—no matter how young they are under all that makeup.
