Rock fans: Did you like the music of the band KISS?

Asked by jca (36062points) November 6th, 2016

When I was growing up, so many people that were older than me would talk about their love of the band KISS. Those were the days of the “rock logo” i.e. KISS, Van Halen (VH logo), Iron Maiden, etc. People at school would draw the KISS logo on their books and seemed to revere KISS as rock gods.

I know the musicians in KISS are very good marketers, with all kinds of KISS shit (everything from clothes to coffins).

I only knew of about two KISS songs and they were not incredibly good and not that popular. Now as an adult, I know of some more popular KISS songs but they’re not that good, either.

What is your opinion of the music and the band KISS?

I loved KISS, but I think I glossed over the quality of their music. In retrospect it wasn’t very good. But I thought they were so cool.

My dad was a big fan. I think he liked the theatrics more than anything, because he had a good taste in music, otherwise.

He was really into musical theatre, Rocky Horror Picture Show, stuff like that. So anything with a lot of whiz-bang or costuming appealed to him. Meat Loaf, Culture Club, KISS etc.

But when he listened to music for the sake of the music, it was usually Peter, Paul and Mary, The Carpenters, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc.

Meh…they had a few okay tunes but, quite frankly, being a fan of 60’s & 70’s rock I didn’t like their crazy make up and Gene Simmons obscene antics. I liked the down to earth rock stars of my era much better.

Never thought much of them. I am more to the Fleetwood Mac end of the spectrum, although I loved going to Rolling Stones concerts in the 70s and 80s.

Bands that wear face paint seem silly to me.

They were / are good musicians. While I do like and appreciate some of their music, I never considered myself a fan (though Simmons Family Values was a secret pleasure when I still watched tv – Gene and his kids cracked me up).

Now, Meat Loaf and Boy George – those are guys with fabulous voices. Culture Club was in Toronto last week. Friends have been putting up videos of the show. Boy’s voice is still beautiful, though a different type of tenor than it was in his youth.

I love Meat Loaf and Culture Club.

Not KISS though… Or Guns and Roses, or Def Leppard
(what has nine arms and sucks?).

Scorpions, Quiet Riot, Queensryche, sure.

No. Thankfully I don’t remember them being so popular in the UK and we had our own swag of glam rockers.

They were much more popular in Australia. When I came here and people carried on about KISS I’d be like ‘who?’ I could and cannot understand the attraction.

Gah, no!

Always hated them. At least Van Hallen could play guitar. Kiss was so fake.

I pay to see live music in Los Angeles, Orange County, Nevada, San Diego, and/or San Francisco 3 or 4 times a month every month. I’ve been doing this for years. Mostly rock music. Punk once (very enjoyable, but I chose the band carefully). Plus some country.
I’ve always seen KISS as nothing but gimmick music. Devoid of soul, devoid of substance.
No heart, All theatrics. I tried to like KISS as a kid because all the big kids loved it, but I never could get into it. I thought they sucked then, and I think they suck now.
They seem to be genius businessmen.
