The defense must vary with the eruption.

I’m going to support the progressive side of the Democratic Party that is getting ready to fight Trump tooth-and-nail. Now is the time for the party to reject neoliberalism ideology that led to a Trump presidency. Chuck Schumer is now going to be the minority leader. This is the guy who takes more money from Wall Street than anyone. Now is the time to let your leaders know how you feel about that.

I’m going to try to listen to conservative friends who supported him, and hope they listen to me when I point out this administration is doing things that are scary.

I’m going to renew my passport on time. ~

I’m going to get out and vote in two years!

I’m going to keep an eye on what my government is doing like never before.

I hope a “moderate” candidate surfaces for president next election that will capture the vote of the majority of Americans. I hope it’s a Democrat, but even a republican might be ok. I don’t understand why everyone thinks a more extreme left leaning candidate would win? The right will come out in droves to fight back against that.

@JLeslie Because Trump went to the LEFT of Clinton in the rust belt!!!!

Watch this and see why Clinton lost. Running a Clinton 2.0 will fail just as miserably as Clinton 1.0.

I have a little research to do, but I have plans to donate $20 each to:

Something that supports the ACA
Some environmental fund
Black Lives Matter
Planned Parenthood
Something in support of the natives currently fighting the pipeline
Something LGBTQ related.

Open to suggestions for the ones I haven’t figured out yet. I just haven’t had time or energy to do the research.

After that, and after I heal, I want to do more active protesting every time he makes a terrible decision.

Here’s a great article by Nick Kristof from this morning’s “NY Times” about what people who are aghast at the election results can do.

janbb's avatar

@Mariah Look into the Southern Poverty Law Center which fights bigotry and racism and The International Rescue Committee which aids refugees. They are two great organizations that I have been supporting for years.

Awesome, thanks Jan.

I donated to Tammy Duckworth’s (D IL) campaign and she then defeated Mark Kirk.

This flipped that Illinois Senate seat from red to blue.

Also, the SPLC is taking reports on hate incidents at https://www.splcenter.org/reporthate

The Anti-Defamation League is doing the same at http://support.adl.org/site/R?i=yEuvvY-1CgoVc0raWv5ASA

If I had more money, I’d donate to the Democratic Governor’s Association’s efforts to force McCrory to accept the NC election results:

“We defeated anti-LGBT Governor Pat McCrory in North Carolina, but now he’s refusing to accept the results of the election – instead trying to question Democratic votes.

Our government is built on the promise of free and fair elections and the fundamental right to vote, but McCrory – the king of voter suppression – is willing to do anything to keep himself in office.”

When I get some more time, I’m going to PM syz about this. I hope she’s okay and is already on top of this.

I’m not letting Trump voters plead ignorance. They knew what they were getting when Trump went after Mexicans and Muslims and and women and veterans and immigrants. They knew when Trump promised to torture people and insulted parents who lost a soldier son.

No begging, “I just like the economic policy!”

“He would be nice to have a beer with” is no excuse for people with fascist instincts, even if they’re too naive and ignorant to know understand what they’re doing.

I joined the ACLU. I will continue to support Everytown for Gun Safety. I will continue to support GLAAD.

More importantly, I will speak up for the rights of the mentally ill and those with substance abuse disorders every chance I get.

Finally made my donations today. Here’s the final checklist:

Planned Parenthood
Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
Southern Poverty Law Center
Black Lives Matter
International Rescue Committee
ACLU
Union of Concerned Scientists
Greenpeace
The Sierra Club
Human Rights Campaign Foundation
ActBlue

Now let’s just hope that my insurance actually covers my recent hospitalization as I’m expecting them to, or else this could have been a really poor financial decision…..lol….not actually laughing though…..

Sending money out to various orgs this weekend. Also, wearing my safety pin – for good or uselessness. And will be working with other Unitarian congregants on interfaith and other appropriate actions.

Rarebear's avatar

@Mariah I disagree with a couple of organizations on your list for my own reasons, but thank you for taking a stand.

Mariah's avatar

Curious to hear more if you want to PM me, but no worries either way.

Rarebear's avatar

Oh, it’s just Greenpeace and Sierra Club. I think that climate change is the single greatest threat this planet has, and Greenpeace and Sierra Club actively campaign against nuclear power, which has zero carbon emissions and could save the planet. Greenpeace is also inexplicably anti-science in their anti-gmo stances, and if that’s not enough, there is this.

Mariah's avatar

Oh, okay, I’m with you on those things too then….darn. Nuclear is likely one of our only hopes. And I am super pro GMO because I like being able to feed more people. That’s unfortunate….should have done a bit more research, thanks for the info.

janbb's avatar

@Mariah It’s ok. While I agree with @Rarebear, they’re still going to be fighting on our side and we need all the bedfellows we can get right now!

Mariah's avatar

Totally. Do either of you know a better environmental foundation? I also donated to Union of Concerned Scientists which looked pretty promising.

janbb's avatar

@Mariah Earthjustice, Natural Resource Defense Fund, The Nature Conservancy

Mariah's avatar

Great, thanks everybody! More donations forthcoming after I actually receive confirmation that my insurance company is covering my expenses….heh.

Rarebear's avatar

@Mariah I asked Cirbryn (inactive flutherite) who is my go-to question on something like this. I know that he’s a Sierra Club fan, but he’s one of my best friends and won’t steer us wrong.

Pandora's avatar

I like @Mariah plan. I’m going to do some research but they sound like worth while causes. The ACLU and Green peace are a definite yes.

Mariah's avatar

Make sure to read the above discussion about Greenpeace but yeah, go for it!

Pandora's avatar

Ok, maybe not green peace. I didn’t know they would be just as stupid as the people they were fighting.

Mariah's avatar

They’re still a good organization, but it looks like there are better environmental organizations too. I feel good about all the ones listed by Jan and Brian above, as well as Union of Concerned Scientists.
