Why do people like the "kumbaya" song so much? I just don't understand the fascination.

I’m not sure if I spelled it correctly but I want to know why people (especially girl scouts and hippies) like song so much. Does it stand for peace or something? To me it sounds a bit dreary and dragged out. Do you like it? Please help me understand.
