How do I get rid of a repetitive McAfee ad solicitation on my new computer?

Asked by Coloma (47193points) November 30th, 2016

I recently purchased a new laptop that came with 6 months of Webroot security. I am being slogged by McAfee ads to download and/or restart my computer for the McAfee updates. I am unable to disable these damn ads, any geek squad types able to help this tech challenged lady?

Ugh,commercial anti-virus programs virtually ARE viruses.

It should be removable like a normal program, so first try this. If not let us know.

How to Uninstall Programs in Windows 10

1. Open the Start menu.
2. Click Settings.
3. Click System on the Settings menu.
4. Select Apps & features from the left pane…A list of all installed apps appears in the right pane.
5. Select an app you wish to uninstall.
6. Click the Uninstall button that appears. If it is grayed out, this is a system app you cannot remove.
7. Click the Uninstall pop-up button to confirm.

I finally had to resort to downloading a free version of iobit Advanced System Care package from Cnet. It comes with an excellent, easy to use Uninstaller program that not only finds and gets rid of all the commercial programs, it cleans out all the little stuff those programs leave behind in the registry and elsewhere. And when their notices to buy the iobit PRO version began to pop up 90 days later, I simply used their own uninstaller to remove the Advanced System Care package. I highly recommend it.

@Call_Me_Jay I just uninstalled it. I thought I already had but apparently not. Thanks!
@Espiritus_Corvus Haha, talk about shooting themselves in their own foot.
I’ll keep that in mind.

Yeah. The iobit uninstaller is so good that it is about the only uninstaller that can get rid of the iobit package completely. The package is very good at continuously keeping all the cookies and junk files from building up and slowing down your computer, actually, and I’ve been tempted to buy the Pro version. But it gets a little glitchy with the newer versions of Windows. Works perfect with 7 and below. So, I’ll wait for the most updated version.

Fuck it’s back! Now what? *(%$##^@!!!
Maybe have to try the iobit uninstaller, but no time to mess with it now. I may just have to have my tech whiz daughter help me out. haha
Thanks for the tip Crow man!

I see McAfee has its own Consumer Products Removal tool

I would use it. They are owned by Intel. They may be douchey but they aren’t the Russian Mafia either.

@Call_Me_Jay Thanks! Gotta run here but I will mess around with a fix later.

I think one reason my husband left me was after I had uninstalled Norton and he had to clear out all its tendrils. :-)

@janbb You discovered way #51 to leave your lover…

@janbb Tendrils? Oh great, tendrils. Maybe I’ll just leave myself.
I’ll report back at some future date but there is no way I have time to mess with this the next few days. Thanks for all the info. gang.

Okay…it is now gone, forever. I think I forgot to click on the final remove installation button yesterday. So far no notifications and update solicitations since this morning. 7 hours in the clear. haha
