How much taxes do you pay in the U.S when you purchase something?

Asked by Lovefirst (116points) November 30th, 2016 from iPhone

1. For example a pair of pants or hair brush. What’s the tax percentage ?

2. Or second example: what would the tax deduction look like on your pay if you make 680 a week ?

You are talking about very different forms of tax and it varies state to state. Purchases have sales tax and that is determined by State. Income tax is paid to Federal and State.

@cazzie indeed,

Thats why i broke it in two. I forgot about the states though just like here in Canada different provinces, different taxes. Here in Quebec we pay the most in Canada

I.e we pay 14,975% taxes on purchases sales because of the federal and provincial tax

In the payroll example a 680 gross salary will give 497 net

Wanted to compare and see the differences. Our costs are crazy here !

( I know it could always be worse, I’m just curious though)

If you had to pay for medical insurance like they do in the US it would be much higher.

I live in Norway. I pay about 30% income tax. Our sales tax 25% unless it’s food. Then it’s a bit lower.

I live in Oregon so we pay no sales tax. Income and property taxes are really high. But that seems reasonable. If you own a home you can pay more.

yes the medical insurance is deducted on our pay (its for eye care/dentist/orthodontist depending on what your job insurance offer)

Our income taxe is about the same.

Someone friom Texas who visited here a few weeks ago say our sales prices are really high. A t-shirt here is min 25 if your lucky to 40$+

@johnpowell seems like a great deal that balance out maybe

Actually our income tax is a bit more because at the end of the year we still ended owing money despite de deductions

Cities and counties have sales taxes as well as states. Our combined 10.25% sales tax is the highest in the US. Groceries are less.

I live in Western NY. we pay a total of 8% sales tax. That is 4% for NY state and 4% for the County.
Our property tax rates are near the highest in the country, about $40 per year per $1000 of assessed value. A home that sells for $150,000 will cost you $6000 per year in tax. That sounds terrible but our property values are near the lowest in the country. A $150k home will likely be around 3000 sq ft. on a nice sized lot in suburbia. The houses in this area are some of the best deals in the country. (I guess nobody wants to live in snow.)

In some towns and cities, there’s no sales tax on clothing under a certain amount. So if you spent $5000 on a fur coat, you’d pay tax but if you bought some jeans and tee shirts, you wouldn’t pay tax. (for example). Where I live and most places I’ve been, there’s no tax on necessary food items. There will be a tax on foods like candy, junk food, etc.

There’s a tax on gasoline and liquor.

When you work, money is taken off the top for Social Security, unemployment, a bunch of things (my check is direct deposited and I never look at it but there are explanations that come with each check). Then once a year you pay income tax based on your income and deductions. If you own property, you pay tax to local government for school, town, county, maybe fire department, a bunch of things.

6% state sales tax.

It varies by state and even by county or city as you can see from the answers above. When I lived in TN sales tax was 9.25% on purchases, and they even taxed groceries, but I think the grocery tax was 7%.

Here where I live now it’s 7% sales tax in Florida, but no tax on groceries. Actually, the state is 6% and my county levies the extra 1%, this is how it’s typically done in most states. The consumer doesn’t usually know how much goes where, because you just pay the 7% altogether.

Income tax is levied by the federal government and everyone is subject to that, and then most states have income tax, and some addition County and city tax. A few states don’t have income tax, Florida is one of them. Here is a link to our federal tax tables on annual income. Mind you, you are not taxed on your total income, there are automatically a few thousand shaved off the top. You can look at the 1040EZ form if you want an idea of how a simple federal income tax filing looks. It’s just one page.

The state of Colorado has a sales tax of about 3%, and the city and county I live in combine to add about 5%, for a total of 8%. Additional taxes on alcohol, tobacco, gasoline and marijuana are usually calculated into the price.
