Oh, this is such sad news. My sincere condolences, @sccrowell. I will never forget his Fluther marriage proposal to you. He was a wonderful guy.

chyna's avatar

Oh no! I just thought about him in the last week. I came across a pm he had written me after I sent you all a stained glass unicorn.
Rarely does an internet friend truly touch other people in the way that Gary did. His stories made things come alive for all that knew him. I am honored to have met him and only wish it had been in person.
Thank you for taking care of Gary all this time and thank you for telling us. I’m sure this has been very hard for you.
I’m so glad he had you.

I don’t know either of you, but watching some of your story unfold on Fluther made me feel a bit like I did. It was beautiful. I’m so sorry to hear this.

rangerr, here. Can’t seem to login to my main account at all.

I’m so sorry. I don’t even know if I have words right now, as a few of us thought we had already lost Gary a while back since there was a long period of radio silence. It feels like losing him twice now.

Gary sent me a beautiful handmade pipe after finding out I was using apples to smoke at the time. He simply told me “Apples are for eating.” and asked for my address. A while later, the most beautiful and smooth pipe I’ve ever owned showed up, with both our named carved in it and a sweet little sparkly heart. That thing has seen an incredible amount of use, including travelling with a few of us Jellies on a camping trip quite a few years ago. I’ll use it tonight and remember all of his wonderful stories and advice.

I love you guys to the moon and back, and I hope you are finding peace. We are all here for you. <3

What a sweetheart of a man Gary was and how much care and thought he gave to all of us Jellies. It was so great to see the love you had for each other.

I hope knowing how much we loved and have missed Gary will comfort you some in your loss. If you need Fluther, we’re here.

I arrived here few months after the your engagement and wedding. I have since followed the old threads. They are famous on this site. They are possibly the most poignant I have ever seen on the net and they made me sorry I never had a chance to interact here with either of you.

My deepest sympathies, @sccrowell.

I’ll always miss you, Gary. Perhaps we can hook up again on the next go round.

I am so very sorry to hear this news. Gary was one of those jellies who made Fluther as fun as it once was. He was always a warm and witty person and is deeply missed here. Losing jellies like him is just another reason I don’t visit this site very often. So sorry. ;(

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

I’m sorry to hear this news. Like others have said, I didn’t get to meet him in person, but I have seen so many jellies mention his name as someone they missed and cared about greatly. It takes a very special person to reach so many people.

@sccrowell – I have fond memories of interacting with you both back in the day. My condolences you you, and all who are missing Gary. ((((hugs))))

I was so excited to just receive a PM (as I rarely get them), only to find it was you @sccrowell delivering the news of Gary’s passing.

I am so terribly sorry for your loss. It was so amazing to be able to see, from here in the virtual lagoon, how much you two loved each other.

Gary once, out of the blue, sent me every single Ryan Adams album burned onto CDs and included not only song lists, but a few brand new sharpies so I could label each disc. I’ve listened to each album dozens of times and think of Gary’s random act of kindness every time.

I will listen to them again tonight and think of how much better we’d all be with more folks like Gary in the world.

I did not know wtf on a personal level but always thought he had the coolest avatar ever and really seemed to espouse the love of people and life I aspire to. @sccrowell thank you for having the strength to come here to share your loss. No matter who the Jelly is that I sense we all share in your loss obviously some more so than others…but a shared moment of loss and sadness nonetheless.

Sherry, this has been such a long struggle for both of you. I always admired your and Gary’s positivity and passion for life and love during such a difficult time. Please know that you are loved and I will always cherish the fond memories I have of you both. xox

Back in the day I asked a question about how to get into classical music and he sent me about 30 CD’s that are fantastic.

He also sent me a pipe that he carved. I have actually always had it sitting on my desk for the last 8 years. Here is a picture from just a few seconds ago.

Now I kinda feel like shit since all the marring in it from me hammering in tiny nails on a bookcase from IKEA. But in the end somehow that feels right.

He will be missed.. Please let us know if you need anything.

I’m so sorry to hear this news. Gary was a wonderful man, and the two of you were a wonderful couple. Thank you for sharing part of your lives with us. <3

I’m also very sorry and sad to hear this news. I have very fond memories of Gary and think of him often. I still have a gift I was supposed to mail to him (I lost his address) as a thank-you for the pipe he made me. It is sitting on top of my bookshelf. Sherry, if possible can I still send it to you, please pm me. I really loved that he liked Arcade Fire and I was always really happy to see him in the campfire. He was always so fun to talk to, intelligent, gentle, wise, def. one of a kind. I will miss him. Sending lots of love to you and your family, Sherry.<3

So heartbroken to hear this. He was such a kind soul and so understanding of everyone. I still have and cherish the tiny sculpture he made me of my name. I’ll be holding it close tonight. :’(

Dear Flutter friend and family, For those who did not know my husband, Gary was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease in 2000. October 20th a few minutes after 6:00 am, I woke up to find that Gary had passed. The official autopsy report stated he had passed from a heart attack due to a blockage in his carotid artery. His ALS was the secondary cause. What makes this so unbearable is that he died at 6. I feel so lost. He wrote a letter to some of you. I saw it and put it I aside. When I locate it, I will share it to you. I can barely read this through my tears, so I’m going to go for now.

tedibear's avatar

Ah no… this is terrible. Whatthefluther was an intelligent, good hearted man. I am so sorry for your loss. Please take care!

chyna's avatar

@sccrowell Many hugs and tears Sherry. I remember the interview Fluther did on Gary and how amazing and wonderful his life was. He affected so many people’s lives on so many levels. With your permission, I will ask the mods if they can reactivate the interview feature and let everyone read Gary’s interview and the other ones that give us insight to the wonderful people that have been a part of Fluther.

@sccrowell Today, on Gary’s birthday, I am just learning of his passing. I am so very sorry for your loss. Losing Gary means to me that there is a little less light in the world. I loved discussing just about anything with him, but especially music and people.

I remember meeting you on Fluther first, a discussion about a new dauchsund puppy that you guys had gotten. I am so very glad that after all he went through Gary had you in his life. That you two had each other for several years. Please be taking good care of yourself as you grieve.

I’ll miss him always.

chyna's avatar

@sccrowell If you ever come back to read this thread, I’m wondering if you found the letter Gary wrote? If so, I would love for you to post it.
He is still in our hearts as well as you. I hope you are doing well.

janbb's avatar

@sccrowell Love from me too. I am thinking of you both.
