How do I start a social networking website with some technical knowledge?

I have some technical knowledge of html/css as well as apache/php but I want some imput on the best ways to put together a social networking/community website. Any ideas for templates, out-of-box solutions, quick builds, etc?

I use Vanilla.

There is the free version where you upload some php files and make a database and you run the installer and you are good to go. There are lots of themes too. But all of them are kinda shit.
