What is wrong with trying to develop Russia as an ally?

President Obama does not like Putin. Putin clearly regards Obama in the lowest of possible esteem.
Having said that…
Both countries want to to eliminate Islamist radicals from the face of the Earth, albeit for different reasons. But they do.
Both countries have Jewish populations that influence politics, and therefore both are at least patronizing regarding Israel.
Both countries have a strategic interest in the ME. The Russians want a warm water port. The US, and it’s trading partners want the oil.
If you, at the end of the day, had to go to war in the ME, would you prefer the Russians as your ally, or the French.
I know my preference.
And Pres Elect Trump sees the same opportunity.
So what is wrong with that?
