Do you know how a fitbit works? I have a problem with it.

My wife got a fitbit for Christmas. The battery is not lasting as long as it should; it requires charging every day.
She keeps getting messages that certain programs on her phone are draining the battery in her fitbit. The programs are a sudoku app and some other innocuous one that I cannot recall at the moment.
My question is WHY would these apps, on her phone, be draining the fitbit battery life? Other than delete the offending apps, is there anything else she can do?
