Asked by Eggie (5921points) January 20th, 2017

Look how far we have reached with cellphones. Water resistance, video calling, slim designs and incredible cameras that has heat visions (CAT phones). What do you think cell phones may look like in the next 19 years?

Flat and they roll up tiny for carrying and stay flat and rigid when opened up.

Contact lens and eyeglass displays will make bulky phones obsolete for many purposes.

Implants?
In 20 years the technology may no longer be “cell” but could evolve to a hyper-WiFi or other means of making the connection to a pervasive network.

I don’t think there will be cell phones as we know them. I think in twenty years or even ten years, we’ll look back on this era of holding a phone and having to look down at it and touch it as something antiquated.

iOS ain’t going nowhere. Cling to that.

We’ll be wearing them and it’s going to change everything. Practically no aspect of peoples lives will be unaffected by it. Augmented reality is the next big deal, start getting ready for it.

You won’t see them as they’ll be built into the fabric of our clothes. They will charge using solar energy or the energy supplied by walking. The display will be beamed directly into your retina or into your ears and so will use very little power. You will communicate by talking or alternatively by using hand and finger gestures. Trump will still be president.

Very small, implanted under the skin and hooked directly to the brain with a USB port behind one ear. The phone will also include a universal remote for your television and other devices.

All of you sound very Twilight Zoneish. But a bit of everything you all predict will probably be reality. Very scary.

@chyna OH, you got me!

Grafted directly into your brain.

Well how many of you all believe that the design would remain the same in the sense of the smartphone big screen look? The OS on the other hand would be something to wonder.

A lot of people used to think cell phones would only get smaller and smaller as technology progressed. In Zoolander (from 2001), they mocked this by having Derek’s cell phone is so small it can only be used with two fingers. Yet it’s interesting that the opposite has happened. Cell phones are getting bigger and bigger—the original iPhone looks tiny compared to the latest release:

So eventually we may have 12-inch phones as big as laptops :P

@DominicY Indeed, though, phone technology has gotten super tiny.
What else happened is the desktop computer/laptop got much smaller and gobbled up your phone. That, and touchscreens…

Ring or pendant choice. Bluetooth to choice of wireless earplugs or earrings. All functions voice activated making it fully hands free, but with a collapsable hand unit for the choice of doing manual functions. Capable of projecting images onto most any flat surface up to 1.5 m.
You can project your work onto the table at Ihop, or project netflix onto a wall.
