How can I mend a plastic basket?

In my dishwasher there is a plastic basket which holds the knives and forks. I don’t know if this is common in other countries but it is in the U.K. The basket has compartments with a mesh bottom. As I carelessly throw my forks into the basket, the mesh has broken and there are holes in it the the stuff can slip through. This causes a problem as this can block the lower arm from turning and spraying the water around. So how can I mend this? I tried melting it but it makes it even more brittle and likely to break. I have got a back up plan which is to buy a replacement from eBay. They are not expensive but I would like to have a go at fixing it first. Any ideas?
