Has anyone ever been to Palermo, Sicily? Please divulge!

Asked by LeavesNoTrace (5674points) February 13th, 2017

I’m expecting some extra income in 2017 and would love to surprise my lovely partner with a trip abroad as he still hasn’t seen Europe.

I’ve heard wonderful things about Sicily, and the catacombs of Palermo have long been on my must-see list. We’re both foodies and wine lovers of Italian descent, and I think he would get a big kick out of the history, cuisine, and culture of this Mediterranean city.

Has anyone had the privilege of traveling here? Was it worth it or would you choose another destination in the Mediterranean? Flight and lodging prices seem very reasonable, but since it’s a bit of a hike from NYC, I want to choose the best destination for our budget.

Looking forward to your feedback, insights, recommendations, dos and don’ts!

I have a food & antiquities loving neighbor who went to Sicily with her husband and loved it very much. Apart from a general recommendation, and that it can get quite hot, I don’t know details worth sharing. I’ve not been to Sicily myself, though I love the parts of Italy I have been to.
