Has this happened to you or someone you know (Details inside)?

Recent question related to age gap got me thinking. Were you or someone you know have been in a situation that you were mistaken (or vice versa) for your age because of your looks and it was revealed later ? What was the reaction of the other person ( or you) in that situation? Did it cause break up after real age was revealed?

You don’t know how many times I was in that situation. I am unconventionally tall, so I’m often mistaken for someone older than my age. It happened more often when I was a teenager. A typical situation had me in a store/any kind of publish area, and suddenly someone asked: “Excuse me, Miss, could you please…?” As a 13-year-old I was once asked to move my dad’s motorbike just because that person thought I was 18 and the motorbike was mine! Most of the time the misunderstanding doesn’t cause any harm, and I gradually learn to see it in a humorous way.

I’m no longer mistaken for an older person now that my age has matched my body, but my unconventionally deep voice still causes misunderstanding. I could use a service and someone would phone me and thought I was either a man or an older woman. I use it to my advantage and fool people into thinking I’m much older than them, getting more respect from them.

For the longest time people thought I was roughly ten years younger than I am. If my hair was not starting to turn a little peppery I could still pass for about 30. I have been a college student in one form or another into my mid thirties. There were several instances where women in their early twenties expressed an interest until they found out I was older. Between the college student context and looking younger it was an easy mistake to make. My wife is the same way, she is 40 also and could pass for 27. Oddly enough since picking up a few streaks of grey I’m being hit on again after a long dry spell of not being given any attention in that respect.

People think I’m younger than I am.
When my sister was getting married almost two years ago, I went to the make up artist to prepare for the wedding. She thought I was seventeen instead of nineteen (at the time).
A few days ago, we went to the hospital to see my ill nephew. The nurse saw me and asked about my age because the underage people are not allowed in the section, even though I’m 21.

A few years ago I dated a woman I met through an on-line site. Her age was listed as 51. When we met she looked about that- in great shape, no real grey in her hair, younger looking skin.

After we had dated for a while, I said I was surprised she was interested in me because her dating profile said she liked younger men. She then turned to me, and said, “I have to confess, I said I was 51 but I was really born in ‘51. So at the time she was 62.

We dated for a couple more months, but there were other obfuscations that were not huge things, but were evidence of a pattern of behavior.

I have always looked younger than I am, until about the last 10 years. When I was in my early 30’s I played competititve co-ed. We’d played together for over a year, when, for some reason, a player asked how old I was. I said, “34.” He looked at me and said, “Oh, wow. All this time I thought you were one of “us,” indicating the other players, all of whom were in their early to mid 20’s. That kind of hurt. I hadn’t even thought about it until then.

Another time was in a town about 10 miles from my home town. My 2 year old grandson was with me. It was dark, and we got a flat tyre. I was about 37 at the time. A cop stopped to help, and it came out that the child was my grandson. He peered at me and said, “Maybe it’s just this light, but there is no way you look old enough to have a grandson!”
Another time, around that same time, I honestly got carded at a liquor store! He would not accept a picture of my grandson as proof, either! Hadda go out and get my license. Me around that time.

The funniest time was when I gave birth to my first son. I was 19 at the time, but looked much younger. After I went to the finance office to apply for financial help, the nurse on the infant desk said only adults are allowed in. I almost cried and said “I’m the mother”.
