Child Abuse: Path towards Trauma, or Sacred form of Family Bonding?

Asked by Lovelocke (1609points) August 8th, 2008

A lot of people look upon small children as fragile, tiny things weighing less than the total poundage of cheese we’re likely to consume in a year. Myself? When I look at a whee one just able to walk and run, I think about all the ways I can pick them up and rough house: Playing superman, pro wrestling and so on. As a result of that line of thinking (and also physical line of playing) every child I’ve ever met and had time to play with absolutely loves me.

Once, about a year back or so, I was babysitting my nephews (two in total) during the week while their parents were working out new work arrangements (One got a promotion, the other got a new shift). Just for home video’s sake, I picked up a camera (and my nephew) and began to record… to share with family members, but as a bonus, now with you!

IMPORTANT: After I initially put this video online, people began telling me that THIS counts as child abuse. That the whole video was frightening to watch, and even threats that if I didn’t take it down they would report me to the internet police, etc. Many more people thought it was freaking cute, but there were those few (maybe 5 in total) that thought it was ghastly.

QUESTION: Does this video show uncle/nephew playtime, or does it show brutal child abuse? I play with all kids like this, and as a result, all kids LOVE me. I mean that too, like, kids I know will totally forsake their parents to come up and say hello to me when I walk into their houses.

Where do you weigh in? Abuse? Playtime? You make the call… on here, not to the police, that is.

I really hope you’re kidding.

I think your family should remove you from the list of potential babysitters.

I like the grilled cheese question better….

…Have you watched the video or are you just going off of the question again, Fluther? I’d like to think you’ve graduated beyond my wacky wording and over exaggerations..

Okay…............. why did you put this on the internet on the first place? I mean, if it looks so bad but he was laughing or whatever, why submit yourself to be yelled at? And yes, I watched the video.

My verdict for the internet and I sentince you to be yelled at untill you take the video down. Court dismissed.

It looked like fun, and then for some reason he was eating dog biscuits and it got quite weird.

Also, your profile picture looks batshit crazy.

@fort: Yeah, but it’s me… and I’m not a pink VG cat :)

As long as you don’t throw him on concrete sidewalks and BASH his head into the ground.

It looked like lots of fun, hell who hasn’t tried dog biscuits in their life? They’re not tasty, but hell it’s something you’ve got to try once lol

@lovelocke Meh, Aeris is the only true sane person in video game comics.

I guess I could get past the initail question to even watch the video.

Your lack of talking to the kid at all was kind of creepy at first, and I do think it’s abusive to feed a kid dog biscuits. Chasing a kid around the house and throwing him on the bed can be fun and playful but it was YOUR silence that was so weird. (along with the dog biscuits)

@Judi: Agreed.

OH MY GOD! Children across america are eating dog biscuits!

Judi's avatar

Then aside from the creepy no talky I don’t see a problem

poofandmook's avatar

Okay, so you knocked his head into a wall while he was laughing, showed him what happens when you put your hair close to the TV, threw him like a rag doll onto a soft cushy surface, and practically force-fed him cinnamon crackers that are not dog biscuits?

I agree… your silence was creepy… not even a giggle..? But other than that I don’t see how this could be considered child abuse at all. Even if they were real dog biscuits, every kid with a dog tries them at some point, and he was obviously enjoying them. If he wasn’t laughing, then I’d say you pushed it. But ghastly? Uh, no.

richardhenry's avatar

I had no idea Kelloggs made those.

shilolo's avatar

I’m not sure showing a kid that it is fun to bang their head into various structures would be considered a good idea. My two year old son does that enough by accident, I don’t want him making a habit out of it.

MrMeltedCrayon's avatar

I’ve done some of the same things you’ve done with my nephews (tossed ‘em on beds, spun them in circles, etc.). I think there is a difference between rough housing and deliberately attempting to hurt a child.

tinyfaery's avatar

Not child abuse. Your nephew was obviously having a good time. However, another child, one more anxious, might not enjoy such treatment. It’s always important to consider the reaction of the child when deciding how to play with one.

Lovelocke's avatar

@Judi – Funny thing about the silence, I make movies… and whenever the camera’s rolling, no matter what happens, I am quiet. Not until a take is “over” are you supposed to speak, or really breathe or move around or anything… heh.

MarshallO's avatar

I think that you have an abnormal interest in little boys!

Skyrail's avatar

Aww, it certainly looked like your nephew was enjoying himself, I see nothing wrong with it, I’ve seen worse happen between kids. The silence was kind of creepy though (I didn’t watch the whole video by the way, I watched short clips and skipped through it, as interesting as it was…)
