Do you have a cookie jar?

Asked by wilma (16457points) March 6th, 2017

My son brought his new girlfriend home from college for a visit. Apparently she was a little surprised that we had a cookie jar on the kitchen counter, with cookies in it. She thought that was quaint, and sweet, and didn’t realize that people actually used, or still used cookie jars. She said, “I didn’t realize that that was really a thing people did ”.
Growing up, most of the kitchens I visited had a cookie jar on the counter. Now, I’m not so sure that is the case.

A bit of background on us, we live in the upper mid-west of the US. The girlfriend is first generation American born, and her parents are originally from Taiwan.
So is this a cultural difference? A regional difference? A thing of the past? Or maybe her parents like clear kitchen counters, and everything stored in cupboards?
What do you think?

No, no cookie jar. If the kids are coming home for a holiday, I might have baked goods in a tin on the counter but not as a regular thing.

I have one on top of the refrigerator with nothing in it. But it’s cute and I like it.

With a 17 yr old still in the house cookies don’t last more than a day or two. We do have a cookie jar but is has been turned into a spare change receptacle.

Yes. It’s an apple. When I was growing up we had an apple cookie jar, so when I saw this one at the store I couldn’t resist buying it. I don’t store cookies in it though.

I have a body part jar.

I’m sure I own one (somewhere), but I don’t have it filled and out on a counter. I’d eat the cookies! We really only have cookies around for special occasions these days.

We have a few, but they’ve been relegated to duties other than cookies. One holds matchbooks. Only inferior store bought cookie should be relegated to cookie jars. My treasures must be sheltered from the horrors of degradation associated with prolonged exposure to the air.

I have one my son painted at a ceramic do it yourself place when he was two and a half.

It is on top of the fridge because I don’t have a lot of counter space, and when we make cookies they don’t last long enough to get into the jar.

We have always had a cookie jar. The one we had when I was a kid was an elephant. I wish I still had it, it was so cute. Now we have one that looks like a kitty cat. And yes, it has cookies in it. We’re from southern California, if that helps.

I have two. One was my grandmother’s (Mom’s mother – light brown with some fruit painted on) and I don’t use it in any way.
The other one was Mom’s/our family’s when I was growing up. (It looks like a round brown shack with shingles.) Dad won it at a fair when he was in high school and gave it to the girl he was with. When they broke up, she gave it back.
Dad’s mom had one that looked like a light blue pineapple.
So, yeah, we always had them around.

I have a simple glass cookie jar, I keep Fiber One bars in it, lol. I also have my grandmother’s cookie jar and I keep dried fruit in it. I don’t have anything against cookies, I swear. My mother keeps a cookie jar (with cookies) on her counter. I live in Ohio.

My cookie jar is usually filled with mixed nuts but it is empty at the moment.

I had one, once, until I borrowed it to a guy who wanted to make a video. Never got it back.

flutherother's avatar

“lent it to a guy”

jca's avatar

The guy borrowed it, you lent it or loaned it.

Baking cookies on your own is no longer a trend for most people that live with metropolitan lifestyle. You or your kids want cookies? Supermarket and convenience stores have them in packages, hence the non-existent of cookie jar in most metropolitan household.

I personally don’t have it but I remember that my grandma that live in small town used to have a number of cookie jars that contain not only cookie but other snacks as well that she made herself.

janbb's avatar

When I have cookies, they usually are ones I baked myself but I don’t do it often enough to warrant a cookie jar.

No. I only knew a few people who had cookie jars with cookies in it. I think it partly might have to do with my family mostly living in apartments and small town houses and very little counter space. We didn’t always have cookies in the house growing up, but we often did.

In my house now I have cookies in the house now and then. No cookies today.

I think it is a Leave it Beaver type of thing the cookie jar. I can see why the gf saw it that way. I like Leave it to Beaver, so I don’t say it with any negativity.

You don’t have to have baked from scratch cookies to have a cookie jar. One family I can think of who had a cookie jar often had Oreos in it.

I used to have one… I think it broke in a move. I’d like to have another because the Tupperware I use now is a bit small.

My grandmas each always had one. It only seems right.

LuckyGuy's avatar

I have one that belonged to my parents. They called it Pierre the baker . It is filled with matchbooks.

Definitely not cookies!

jca's avatar

@LuckyGuy: I got “This site can’t be reached.”

LuckyGuy's avatar

@jca Hmm… It just worked for me… I’ll try again. Here . Better?

If not, just google “cookie jar yellow pierre baker”

jca's avatar

Probably something with our computer at work, @LuckyGuy. Second link didn’t work either. I googled it. I see it’s a collector’s item!

We have biscuit barrels
I had a “nookie’ jar as a young teen, filled with warm honey…under the bed :D

Coloma's avatar

No cookie jar but…I have a candy drawer. haha
My stash of Tootsie Pops, fruit chews, red licorice, coffee nips and other assorted low fat candy.

JLeslie's avatar

@Coloma My mom had hiding places for her chocolate.

Coloma's avatar

@JLeslie I love rummaging around my candy drawer, you never know what you might find. haha

janbb's avatar

@JLeslie So did mine and so do I but I know where mine are!

zenvelo's avatar

@janbb And I know where your’s is! In the vegetable drawer of your refrigerator.

Coloma's avatar

@janbb I bet you have a stash of Swedish Fish. lol

JLeslie's avatar

Correction, there are now cookies in the JLeslie house. I looked up 24 year anniversary and there was nothing! So, I decided the modern gift should be Oreos while I was walking through Walmart today.

@janbb I remember one evening my dad telling (insisting) my mom give him some chocolate! He said, “I know you have some hidden!” He was overweight, and supposed to be on a diet. She told him no a few times, but I think she finally gave him some.

@Coloma I love that.

Coloma's avatar

^ Oh, I love the mint filled Oreos. help me, I am on a strict low fat, low carb program right now, My big splurge was a couple of red vines the other night. It’s the night time snacking that kills me, I just have to go to bed or I will raid the fridge. lol

wilma's avatar

@JLeslie , It’s been a while. I still like green and white, but my son is at the other school now, so I usually have to wear blue.

We didn’t have a cookie jar when I was a kid, but I kinda, sorta collected them as an adult. My favorite was a ceramic cat. You took off the head to reach inside.
I also have two of these: I got them about 15 years apart. One at a thrift store, the other at a garage sale. They’re hand painted, and the paint will come off if you scrub them too hard.
For many years I thought they were Russian. I was so tickled to learn that they’re actually Dutch, because I’m of Dutch heritage.
Never kept cookies in any of them though.

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^If you click on my link, wait a moment. The one I’m referring to should pop up. It did for me, anyway.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

I stopped at my parents’ house today and there was a brand new cookie jar on the counter. How about that!

kritiper's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf So, what did it look like??

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Just a simple glass jar that had a label on the front that says “cookies.”
