Meaning behind Devendra Banhart's tattoos?

I read somewhere that his tattoos on his arms (http://www.kowner.com/portraits/images/devendra_banhart_2319d.jpg, the four lines one each forearm) represent balance. i was wondering if this was true or if anyone else had any sort of interpretation for them. i really like them and would like to know what significance they have.

From this interview in Harp magazine (no relation) -

“Banhart has four lines tattooed on each of his arms. I ask him what they symbolize. ‘Four lines,’ he says. ‘They’re balance. They could mean a lot of things. But they’re just balance. I say one thing now, but it will change in a week.’”
