Yet another nail in the coffin of bipartisanship.

The same way I feel about the rest of the disassembly of our government.

Harry Reid would spin in his grave. If only he were dead.

Indeed. It was the one final check on partisanship in our government. It goes downhill from here.

Was the law changed so that only a simple majority is required to bar filibuster for bills, or just for Supreme Court nominations? It’s a big deal either way, but if it affects bills too, this could have huge implications. They’d be able to pass the AHCA if they tried again, for example.

Oh, also, I think it’s crazy that they can just change the rules for approval if they don’t like the fact that they couldn’t get approval. That’s absurd. It’s unfortunate that the Democrats set the standard by doing something similar in 2013.

Mariah. For everything. Filibuster is dead forever.

The filibuster is was used under the Standing Rules of the Senate, and sadly, was also done away with under the same rules.

Sorry to be like this but can you show me a source? I just want to be certain as this is a big deal. Everything I’ve read seemed to indicate that only the rules around filibustering Supreme Court picks had been changed. But it could just be the way articles are phrasing things. Finding the full truth can be difficult in journalism these days.

Ok, your link says (emphasis mine) “The Senate Republicans’ successful effort on Thursday to end the 60-vote threshold to proceed with confirmation of Supreme Court nominees was really only the final step in a process set in motion by Democrats in 2013, when they removed that threshold for other nominees” and later “Ms. Collins has written a letter to the leaders of the Senate seeking a pledge that they will maintain the filibuster rule for legislation, and was gathering signatures from members of both parties on the floor even as the so-called nuclear option was being played by Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader.”

It looks to me like bills can still be filibustered.

@Mariah Oh, well maybe you’re right. For all nominations, though, it’s a simple majority. I was under the impression that the Democrats killed the filibuster for everything in 2013 except SCOTUS.
