What is it about hormonal shift during menstruation that messes up with our minds?

Asked by butterfly_Wings (64points) May 4th, 2017

Days before I get my period and during my period as well, I feel it messes up with my mind, I get sensible, down, sad, I cry so easily (my tears just come out of my eyes so easily) I get melancholic and nostalgic, especially since I broke up with my ex around 2 months ago, I get those nostalgic flashbacks and it’s like if they haunted me when I am on my period, I don’t get it!. How can I handle this?

A lot of how hormones effect women is also based on temperament. If you are naturally a more sensitive, feeling type of person you might notice an increase in feeling sentimental. If you’re a more logical type, you might find an increase in irritability. Usually it is a flood of Estrogen that can effect mood.

Hormones effect every women differently. Cutting back of caffeine and salt and taking Vit. B6 and Vit.E are good ways to attain some relief during the PMS phases of your cycles. It really works. Doing this all month long will have a positive effect on your PMS, but doing it at least in the 2 weeks re-period phases will also help. Otherwise, just gotta ride it out until you hit menopause around 50 something. haha

Oh, I just saw this after answering your later post. Please ignore my advice on that one.

I get the exact same way on and around my cycle. I’m 28 and child-free but have always been a highly-sensitive person. It’s gotten more intense since I’ve started using Implanon (hormonal implant in the arm) but it’s always been part of my life. It was less intense when I used a Paragard (a nonhormonal IUD).

Having suffered a personal loss can certainly make it worse. I also find it harder to focus during this time which is very frustrating.
