What do you do for yourself to bounce back from a disappointment?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37334points) May 17th, 2017

I’ve had a disappointment at work. I work in government, and the byzantine processes that situations take for necessary approvals are quite complex. I have been planning to conduct a training that was not approved, so now I have to start over from scratch.

I’m going to put it aside for today. At break time, I’m going to walk outside under the sun. I’ll wander down the block to sit in the Episcopal Cathedral at lunch time. I like it there; I often meditate during lunch there. (The olive trees, of which you can just see a bit of an upper branch in that picture, were planted by Queen Emma 150 years ago.)

What do you do for yourself when you have a disappointment to cheer yourself up?

As a 25 year government worker, I can tell you there’s a lot of apathy everywhere and part of it is for reasons like you describe.

For myself, when I have any kind of disappointment, I talk to myself about what I have otherwise that’s positive. What’s good in my life? My family, my finances, an upcoming trip, etc. That’s what helps me.

@jca I’ve only been in this job for 21.5 months. I can see how it could lead to apathy.

I walked outside for a bit during my morning break. It helped.

I travel back in time and try to change my past. Sometimes I don’t know what to change and am truly helpless.

At work I would go to the local arboretum and sit down with a Fosters at lunch.

In life I usually go into a funk for a few days then manage to put it into perspective, let it slide into the background and then get on with trying to enjoy what remains of my mortal life.

Grab my headphones and go out for a walk. Calms me down every time. Music never fails to cheer me up and it makes the walk even better.

I have usually just thrown myself into the next project or something immediately productive (like house cleaning).

As I get older though, I’m finding that this tactic also exhausts me, which creates other problems (cranky cookieman).

So, I am starting to rethink it and trying to get myself to unwind, go for walks, sit in a coffee shop for a bit, meditate.

It’s a slow change though. Old habits and all.

I sat in the cathedral for a time. I was able to meditate before the homeless woman decided to create her own religious service for all the world to hear.

I walked across the street to the art museum and saw a very good, small exhibit of printmaking. There were some very lovely pieces.

In university I would stay in the meditation room In the chapel.

I may have something coming up myself (work related) and so I revisited this question so I can look at what others have written. Not getting laid off or anything, but it’s significant.

Toffee sometimes works, but be careful if you have fillings.
