Are metal table tennis nets legal?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33158points) June 5th, 2017

I was watching a video today – a couple of people playing table tennis (ping pong).

The weird thing is that the net was not soft green netting material, but rather a piece of sheet metal (regulation height and width) that had 1 inch holes drilled in it for air passage.

Have you seen this before? Is it common? Is it legal in matches and tournament play?

I doubt it is used in matches and tournaments, but it is quite common in public places, because it is a lot sturdier than nets, and not as easily destroyed by delinquents.

I’m guessing it’s about like the chain link nets you often see on basketball goals in public playgrounds. Sturdy and won’t be destroyed after a week, but you’re probably not going to see it in any kind of serious regulated play.
