Is O.J's 33 yr. sentence for armed robbery correct, if not, why did it stand?

I mean I know most people who believe he is guilty of the killings of his wife and her (brother?) say the fact that he got 33 yrs is fair but aren’t the judges supposed to only look at the case at hand?

There were a lot of charges. A few years for this, a few for that, and it adds up to 33 years.

It wasn’t bank robbery.

He was found guilty on 12 counts:

Count 1: Conspiracy to commit a crime
Count 2: Conspiracy to commit kidnapping
Count 3: Conspiracy to commit robbery
Count 4: Burglary while in possession of a deadly weapon
Count 5: 1st degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon (for Bruce Fromong)
Count 6: 1st degree kidnapping with use of a deadly weapon (for Alfred Beardsley)
Count 7: Robbery with use of a deadly weapon (for Bruce Fromong)
Count 8: Robbery with use of a deadly weapon (for Alfred Beardsley)
Count 9: Assault with a deadly weapon (for Bruce Fromong)
Count 10: Assault with a deadly weapon (for Alfred Beardsley)
Count 11: Coercion with a deadly weapon (for Bruce Fromong as an alternative to count 5)
Count 12: Coercion with a deadly weapon (for Alfred Beardsley as an alternative to count 6)

Each count may result in a separate penalty. 33 years was considered just punishment for these violent crimes.

It wasn’t bank robbery. You should probably read your own link.

The sentence was excessive by all accounts. The judge gave him the maximum and given the crime committed, there is no way to see it other than retribution for the murders of Nicole and Ron. OJ turned down a plea deal (as I understand it it) so the prosecutor went for everything he could think of. The weird thing is that both the guys that actually carried guns got probation right from the start. Most of the country supported that sentence as revenge for his acquittal of the murder charges. Justice is not always blind.

I think @Jaxk nailed it. It was retribution for the murders, not for a robbery of items that he claimed were actually his.

I agree with @Jaxk.

But why isn’t there something that corrects a vigilante judge?

By the way is there supposed to be “flag” under OPs on the mobile version? I’ll correct my “bank” error. I don’t see the preview window either right now.

chyna's avatar

@flo I don’t have access to the flag on the mobile version.

@flo But why isn’t there something that corrects a vigilante judge?

That is a value statement that most people in the State of Nevada would disagree with. That judge was not criticized by those in his jurisdiction, nor by most people in the U.S.

Simpson was found guilty on 12 counts including Kidnapping. Kidnapping can be punished by a sentence of life. And, he is being paroled after only 9 years of a 33 yr sentence. That doesn’t sound like “vigilante” sentence to me.

Sounds like you don’t think he should have been punished at all.

@zenvelo Should we go to the population for the diagnosis re. our medical or legal or other problems?

zenvelo's avatar

@flo For legal, yes! For Medical, no!

Legality (and punishment) is a matter of the consensus of society.

Medical diagnosis is done by educated professionals.

I bet if you add up the potential maximum sentence for each count, he got way less then he could have.
