Stomach bug or food poisoning?

Asked by LeavesNoTrace (5674points) July 22nd, 2017 from iPhone

Last Thursday (~9 days ago) my BF and I ate at a counter service restaurant. It was the only meal we ate together in the past 48 hours or so.

The next night, he has severe diarrhea and vomiting. My stomach felt “off” and I was pretty constipated all weekend but he felt alright the next day.

By Sunday, I was no longer constipated but had developed severe diarrhea, a 100-degree fever, shakes, chills, and was generally feeling horrible.

I felt okay enough by Monday to function competently at work but spent most of the week feeling run down, constipated and irritable. I ate light and stayed hydrated and tried to get plenty of rest, but figured I was on the mend.

Yesterday, my throat started to feel very sore and today, a week later, I have diarrhea again and my temperature is creeping up.

I don’t have health insurance but will go to a clinic if it gets any worse but I’m getting concerned. Had anyone’s body done something similar? Why the sore throat and on again/off again gastrointestinal distress?

Probably food poisoning, go to a clinic

I would have thought food poisoning would come on much more quickly and be over more quickly. This sounds like stomach flu to me but what do I know?

Yes, food poisoning is usually pretty fast acting and comes on within a few hours to a few days, not 9 days later. I’d venture a guess it is some form of gastrointestinal virus but, obviously, if you are really concerned you should see a doctor.
Maybe a walk in minor emergency type clinic if you’re concerned about cost.

Sounds like norovirus to me.

@Coloma My symptoms started last weekend. It kind of died down during the week, but came back with a vengeance today.

@zenvelo Doesn’t norovirus cause vomiting? My BF threw up once last weekend but then felt better. I haven’t thrown up at all.

A touch of salmonella.

Fever is the main clue, food poisoning does not usually cause fever.

I would suggest the clinic to get checked out. If it is food poisoning, then I would suggest contacting the establishment at which you ate to let them know their cleanliness is wanting.

Please let us know how it turns out for you, @LeavesNoTrace.

What did you eat? Did you eat the same food?

I wouldn’t be so quick to decide on food poisoning. It could quite easily be a stomach flu type of thing.

@jca Feeling much better today with no more “incidents”, Thank God!

@elbanditoroso Some counter service, Chinese-inspired take out near Union Sq. The place was called “Walk to Walk” but it should be called “Run to Bathroom”. We both had shrimp and we suspect it had been out too long stored at the improper temperature since we came around 9:30 on a weeknight. Looked into the DOH and apparently they’d been flagged for similar infractions in the past

Sounds like a food borne illness to me. Depending on what type, it can show up anywhere from one hour to 28 days later. Fever is not unusual.

Here are a couple of links with information. Columbia University Mayo Clinic

None of us can accurately diagnose you. Could be anything. Is there blood in your stool? If your fever gets any higher than a hundred, I’d definitley go to the doctor.
