Why do I keep getting messages and notifications from Facebook?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23119points) August 10th, 2017

Here’s the deal, I don’t do Facebook, I don’t have an account I don’t deal with them in any way, but I keep getting these messages via email, I keep deleting them and blocking them but they still come.
What can I do about it?

Do the messages say “log in here” with a Facebook logo? If so, maybe someone created an account in your name.

What do the messages say? Do they say ‘You have a message on Facebook?” or “Someone responded to your comment.” Again, if so, someone may have created an account in your name.

All the time I see duplicate accounts created, where someone takes someone else’s profile photo and creates a new Facebook profile, and then friends all of the person’s friends. The friends accept the friendship request and then I am not sure what the person does with the friends – mines their pages for info? I’m not sure.

I only tried to open just one and my mac went nuts saying this was very unsafe and leave it right away, after that I haven’t opened any of them just delete and block them, but I still get them.

@si3tech: His issue is that as far as he knows, he doesn’t have a Facebook account.

@jca As far as facebook is concerned he has a CONNECTION of some sort. It was not lost on me that he said he had no account. It couldn’t hurt to try.

I would retire that email account and start fresh.

They’re probably just generic looking facebook notifications, claiming you have missed activity and urging you to click on a link.

More than likely they’re just scam emails, leading to phishing sites, viruses or malware.
Depending what type of email account you’re using, you may be able to set up a filter to cause those messages to go directly to a spam folder. You can look up how to do this online for certain email acounts.
Or if not, you might have to create a completely new email account.

But @AshlynM, if Facebook is sending stuff out to random emails, how does FB know that it’s a good email? I don’t get notifications on either of the two email accounts I’ve created since I signed up for Facebook.

@SQUEEKY2 Seriously, keep one email account for making online purchases and create another specifically for friends, family, and whatever billing notifications you want. Never give the new one out casually.

@Dutchess_III Just giving a possibility.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 what do these notifications say?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

AS I said in one of my posts that my mac went nuts when I tried to open one saying it was unsafe and should leave right now, after that I just block and delete them.

I think @AshlynM might be right,I will just keep blocking and deleting them.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I mean, what do they say in the preview, without trying to open it?

Just make a new account, really similar in name to the old one, then send out notification to people in your address book who you want to have it.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

You have unread Facebook notifications.

jca's avatar

It sounds to me like there’s a FB account set up under your name, @SQUEEKY2. Did you ever try to set up an account but not follow through?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hm. @jca, if someone made an account under his name, wouldn’t it show other notifications like, “Someone liked your post,” “See who liked your post,” “So and so sent you a friend request,” and that kind of thing?
“Unread Facebook notifications” is awfully generic.
Just get rid of that email! Save it for crap that’s liable to get you spam, like online purchases.

jca's avatar

But if he’s not posting, @Dutchess_III, then there are no posts to “like.”

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@jca I did have a FB account a few years ago, and set it up under the name Squeeky711 and only had it for a few months, and really disliked it a lot, and after every stranger known to man wanting to be my friend, I totally deleted the account, and never looked back.
and that was years ago.
These notifications only started showing up a few weeks ago.

jca's avatar

Maybe you can contact FB, @SQUEEKY2, and explain to them what is going on and they can shut down whatever account may be existing under your name.

Dutchess_III's avatar

If someone else created an account under his name then it might be reacting to their posts.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I just did a search and found no record of a Squeeky711.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Thanks @Dutchess_III I did believe I totally deleted the account a few years ago, I think @AshlynM is probably correct by saying these notifications are most likely a scam,I will just continue blocking and deleting them.

jca's avatar

There could be an account under any name in the world and using @Squeeky’s email address for setup.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Well if that is the case I hope I am throwing a major wrench in their plans by deleting and blocking the emails.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s not. Unless they can check your email account they don’t know they’re getting anything.
