Which of these quotes most accurately describes your general state of mind?

Asked by josie (30934points) August 15th, 2017

A.)
Bitterness isn’t just a state of mind.
Bitterness is another word for revenge.
One day, bitterness will consume me, and take over my world.

All the things I didn’t do.
All the things that made me unhappy.
All the things that caged me, wrapped me, stopped me.
All the things that bounded me, forbidden me, limited me.

Author not known to me

OR

B.)
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

C) we are all screwed. Exept the lucky few who rise to the top. For fleeting moments. To give us a taste of success to drive us mad from hope , and to encourage others to strive for none existent spoils. Life sucks for most of us most of the time. I struggle against death and sucking and am mad from not letting stuff go.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Take a walk in the sun, keep on truckin’, onward thru the fog, overcome adopt improvise. It can always be worse.

Or for you doom and gloom types: “Deteriorata” – National Lampoon

You are a fluke of the universe. You have no right to be here.
Deteriorata. Deteriorata.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste,
And remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep.
Rotate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself,
And heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss, and when.
Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment,
and despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer maintenance.

Remember The Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate.
Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you –
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore. It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth: birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan.
And let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time, call 606–4311. Ask for Ken.
Take heart in the bedeepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever fortune may be your lot,
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.

You are a fluke of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not,
The universe is laughing behind your back.

Therefore, make peace with your god,
Whatever you perceive him to be – hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal,
The world continues to deteriorate.
Give up!

“Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle.”

“Well, damn. Here we go again.”
I like @janbb‘s a lot. Sometimes, however, I fall short of that.

Coloma's avatar

Some are fighting bigger battles than others so don’t go with that one. Sorry your Mercedes got a flat tire on the way to your Botox injection appt. What a bummer. LOL

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind. None of this really matters, don’t take yourself or others too seriously.

My AA Sponsor: “Don’t worry, they can’t eat you It’s against the rules.”

Me: “Who says they’re playing by the rules?”

NomoreY_A's avatar

Agreed with @Coloma – 100 years from now, we’ll never know the difference.

janbb's avatar

@Coloma Personally, I’d rather be over-compassionate than under, but that’s just me. lol

B) is much more accurate for me.

Not much A), certainly not as written. I have anger, upsets, annoyances and resentments, but I wouldn’t say bitterness, or revenge, nor feel so victimized.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Neither one. I have felt extreme bitterness and it was about to take me over, so I got out of the situation that was causing it. It certainly didn’t feel like revenge, more like a desperate sadness, and it WAS a state of mind.

I feel you can attain B with out a belief in a deity.

janbb's avatar

I didn’t answer the question. I’d have to go with B although I was put off by the God talk at the beginning of the quote. I’ve had shit thrown at me in my life, but I try to keep moving and strive for contentment.

marinelife's avatar

Can I choose only one line? If so. it is still a beautiful world.

JLeslie's avatar

B-ish, but without the God stuff.

I try not to be bitter or hold onto anger, but I’m not perfect at it. Not close.

Coloma's avatar

@janbb I think the middle path between codependent bleeding heart and sadistic sociopath is best. LOL

@JLeslie Yes, holding grudges and anger only harms ourselves. I am grateful that I have never been a grudge holder. I just move on and don’t look back.

josie's avatar

@JLeslie

I agree, but the qualifier saves it
God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,

NomoreY_A's avatar

Grudge holding is a waste of time and effort. I’ve had situations where me and some guy would get in a fight and beat the shit out of each other, and week later we’d be having a beer and laughing about it. And I never went to some head shrinker for anger management, I just concluded on my own, that it’s too much work to be pissed off all the time. Don’t worry, be happy.

janbb's avatar

@josie There are so many assumptions in that second line you quoted that it still doesn’t work for me. However, the main point of the quote does.
