Do you have any plans for the eclipse?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) August 18th, 2017

We’re only 3 hours away from a total eclipse area. It’s in St Louis, MO. I’m trying and trying to convince Rick that we need to pack up the Escalade and just GO! Find a camp sight (or someone’s back yard) where we can primitive camp for virtually nothing. Throw an air mattress in the back of the truck, along with our table top grill and the dogs. Head out tomorrow or Sunday.
Best of all, it’s a good meeting ground for two of my long lost motherless boys, Jauvier and Thurman and his family. Jauvier just got out of jail (again. sigh.) and we just found Thurman last year, after 20 years.
OMG. That would be a once in a lifetime happening, getting them together. And for the eclipse!

Plus I have a Facebook friend who I’ve been trying to get together with who also lives in that area. Just the other day she welcomed an exchange student from South Korea into her home. He just got in Wednesday. Can you imagine if they came, and one of an exchange student’s first American experience was be a tailgate party?!
And KNOW IT ALL lives around there too.

If nothing else, and we stay home, I’m heading to the highest point in town. I’d see a decent partial eclipse. Hope I beat the crowds. I could bring my son and his family with me.

So, what are your plans, if any?

Summon yet another demon.

It does feel like a good time to do it. It’s pretty eerie.

Not to stare at the sun. Really.

Coloma's avatar

Nope, not that interested and Oregon is the closest place to me here in CA. to get the full monty. I’ll just look up pictures. haha

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s far more than just a visual experience @Coloma. I experienced a partial in the late 90’s. I won’t forget it.

Coloma's avatar

Yes, me too…but still not that interested. haha

(What’s so funny?)

I will be at work in New York, will miss it. I saw a partial a few years ago, and would like to be involved in the middle of a total some time, but things did not work out this time.

There are reports of heavy traffic already on most roads into Central Oregon from Northern California.

If you don’t stop it, you’ll go blind. I had planned to go exploring in Amazonia, then, just as I am about to be killed and eaten by indigenous cannibals, awe them with my witch doctor power, by threatening to take the sun away. But I’ll probably just stay home and watch it on the news.

Oh, I seem to have missed it :(

I have been hoping to see this for years, but the worry that i5 is going to be closed, or too packed, along with threats of gas stations going empty, hotels charging ten times their usual price, and my general panic when in crowds, is causing me to stay home.

but you never know…

DON’T GO TO MISSOURI!
People are headed there from all over the world. The traffic is unreal. You would not find a happy spot, and going home would be a nightmare.

Me, I will do a simple blood sacrifice, drink some dandelion wine, dance nekkid covered in body paints to appease the gods and make the rest of the year play out smoothly. Some other jellies have agreed to join me. Oh, and walk backwards around a circle three times.
Anyone else who wishes to join the party is welcome.

Well it’s going to be pretty good as it is from here. Have yet to get Rick to talk about it.

@Dutchess_III What was funny was you telling me that is was more than just the visual and me saying I knew that but still wasn’t interested. Struck me as funny, like thanks but no thanks. Hah.

I bought a bus ticket to go since it is only about 20 miles to get to totality. But my mom wants to go so she will drive. Traffic might be bad but there is only one way to find out. Speaking of, I should get a cooler to pack drinks and sandwiches.

Getting the damn glasses was a horror. They were everywhere a few days ago. But to get them today required hundreds of phone calls but I eventually had luck. There is a hippie grocery store that had a ton.

I actually snagged like 10 extra pairs just knowing some friends or family would wait until the last min. If I was wanting to be a douche for a day I’d set up at a key spot and sell them..$100 a pop. Finding glasses is worse than finding a furby on christmas eve.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think I have a bead on some at a library. They start handing them out for free at 3:00 tomorrow but only 2 pairs per household. After 5 they’ll be selling what’s left for $5 A pop.

Here in Idaho, near Weiser, traffic is expected to be heavy. A 82 mile trip back home to Boise could take 10½ hours. I have to work that afternoon, so will stay in town. I have a welding helmet, and may make a pinhole camera.

@ARE_you_kidding_me :: People were selling the glasses on the street for like 20 bucks a pop. And now even those people are sold out.

My mom is actually the one that found this little hole in the wall natural food store that was giving them out for free. I have no clue how she even found that. I called nearly every 7–11, Circle-K and Dari-Mart looking for them. Word on the street was that McDonalds had them too so I called all of them and they were out too.

You know where I am. I’ll be in central Missouri. Praying to gods I don’t believe in for clear skies.

cookieman's avatar

I’ll be at work but will poke out mid-day, at the expected time of partial-eclipseeness, for a bespeckled look-see.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah, looks like we aren’t going anywhere.

Now there is a big wildfire burning near the epicenter of the total eclipse in Oregon. Might ruin it for many, see if they get it contained in the next few days.
